  • Mechanism, vis motiva, and Fermentation

Antonio Clericuzio, Carmen Schmechel•ARTICLE•Early Science and Medicine•2024

According to the standard view, Borelli was a strict mechanist who sought to explain organic processes by resorting to invisible mechanisms. This paper aims to show that his outlook on living organisms as contained in De motu animalium was far more nuanced than historians have maintained. Borelli resorted to vis motiva as the source of activity of corpuscles, a notion that was at odds with strict mechanism. He identified motive force with spirits…

  • Thomas Willis' iatrochemistry and the activity of matter

    Open Access•Antonio Clericuzio•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2023

This article presents a comprehensive study of Thomas Willis' chemistry and matter theory. Willis' medical and chemical views rest on the assumption that matter is both active and endowed with life. He resorted to chemical principles, which he interpreted in corpuscular terms, to account for physiological processes, including those occurring in the brain and in the nervous system. He combined anatomical research with the chemical investigation of…

  • Plant and Soil Chemistry in Seventeenth-Century England

    Antonio Clericuzio•ARTICLE•Early Science and Medicine•2018•Citada por: 5

In seventeenth-century England agriculturalists, projectors and natural philosophers devoted special attention to the chemical investigation of plants, of soil composition and of fertilizers. Hugh Plat’s and Francis Bacon’s works became particularly influential in the mid-seventeenth century, and inspired much of the Hartlib Circle’s schemes and research for improving agriculture. The Hartlibians turned to chemistry in order to provide techniques…

Argument This article argues that during the seventeenth century chemistry achieved intellectual and institutional recognition, starting its transition from a practical art – subordinated to medicine – into an independent discipline. This process was by no means a smooth one, as it took place amidst polemics and conflicts lasting more than a century. It began when Andreas Libavius endeavored to turn chemistry into a teaching discipline, imposing …
