  • The Effects of Climatic Oscillations (or the Lack Thereof) on Maritime Networks Between Angkor and China in the 14th and 15th Centuries

  • The Ship is Laden with Rice and Salt

Open Access•Wesa Perttola, Emma Slayton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maritime Archaeology•2024•Citada por: 2•Referências: 14

Archaeological and historical sailing modeling has become an increasingly productive field of study in the twenty-first century. The research has largely concentrated on methodological development, yet comparisons between models have so far been lacking. In this paper we juxtapose two directed sailing models, Digital Navigator and qtVlm, on a route from East Java to South Sumatra. In the early seventeenth century, the former was a major producer …

  • Catch ‘em When the Water is Low

    Open Access•Wesa Perttola, Maarit Kallio•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2024•Referências: 17

Fishing and wetlands have in many cases been essential facets of life but are often overlooked in archaeological and historical research. In this article, we focus on the floodplains of the Palembang and Jambi region of Sumatra, where both of these aspects are comprehensively entwined. The floodplain fisheries there are highly productive, and function in a rhythm with the hydrological cycle of the rivers. By combining the pre-existing archaeologi…

  • Digital Navigator on the Seas of the Selden Map of China

    Open Access•Wesa Perttola•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Method…•2021•Citada por: 6•Referências: 25

During the age of sail-powered ships, the maritime trade networks of Southeast Asia were highly cyclical in nature due to the biannually switching wind directions of the East Asian Monsoon. The Selden Map of China provides us with a glimpse of these connections in the early seventeenth century, and it is drawn in a unique way that allows the sailing durations between ports to be measured. In this paper, a novel method of simulating directed sail-…

  • Out of the Peat

Satu Koivisto, Niko Latvakoski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2018•Citada por: 1•Referências: 30

The huge scientific and interpretive value of wetland archaeological sites has been well demonstrated in several studies. The management of the archaeological resource of wetland landscapes is problematic, however, and there is an urgent need for noninvasive techniques to detect waterlogged organic archaeological remains. Stationary wooden fishing structures associated with fishing sites constitute an important wetland archaeological resource in …

  • Hidden and Remote

Open Access•A Wessman, Teija Alenius et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2017•Citada por: 7•Referências: 3

The wetland find in Levänluhta (western Finland) consists of unburnt, mixed up remains from almost 100 human individuals along with artefacts and animal bones. This spring site, a small lake at the time of use ( ad 300–800), has been investigated archaeologically from the late nineteenth century onwards. An impressive array of finds, including precious artefacts, is on display at the National Museum of Finland. However, the material has not previ…

  • Understanding Metal Detecting and Archaeology in Finland

Open Access•Suzie Thomas, A Wessman et al.•ARTICLE•Cuadernos de Prehistoria y…•2016

The use of the metal detector in archaeology, and the relationships between metal detecting enthusiasts and archaeologists, has been long discussed and analysed in different contexts. The tool itself is acknowledged to be a useful prospecting device for use in archaeological fieldwork, and yet it has often attracted controversy in academic and professional archaeologi- cal circles due to its popularity with artefact-hunting hobbyists. In this pap…

  • The Sole You Found was the Soul of the Festival”

Tiina Äikäs, Wesa Perttola et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Archaeology•2016•Citada por: 2

In 2010, we carried out archaeological fieldwork during a rock festival in Seinäjoki, Finland. We had two aims: first, to investigate what material culture tells about how people experience the place where a rock festival is held and second, to popularize archaeology. Our methods included test pits, mapping garbage with RTK-GPS and interviews. This article addresses the questions of transience, temporality and place attachment as witnessed by arc…
