A Harrean perspective of theology
The object of this article is to present Christian theology as a case of a Harrean theory, as a mapping which links the members of one set of entities to those of another in a systematic way. I will divide the article into four parts. The first one will be devoted to a brief presentation of the main characteristics of Harré's proposal. Once the fundamentals of the Harrean perspective are presented, the second section will be the presentation of C…
Aquinas's science-engaged theology
Science-engaged theology has emerged as a new way of conducting research within the vast field of science and religion, with the aim of, at least in one way of understanding it today, solving theological puzzles. In this article we suggest that an analysis of the diversity of approaches in which thirteenth-century philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas engaged theological questions with the best knowledge of the natural world available at the …
Neo-Thomism and Evolutionary Biology
Pope Leo XIII's publication of Aeterni Patris (1879) was a major factor in the great revival of Thomistic thought in the late 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries. Among the authors that took up the challenge implicit in the Pope's document of bringing Aquinas and his thought into the intellectual debates of the times we find two interesting proposals. The first is that of Juan González Arintero, a Spanish Dominican, and the second one i…
Yesterday's Daily Bread
The paper's subject is whether one is justified to pray for an event that has already happened from the point of view of the individual who is praying. About this, there are several possibilities, all of which I will consider: a) the past event is not known to the one who prays, b) it is known by them to have happened in a way which is not the desired one by the one praying and c), it is known to have happened according to their wishes. It also d…
On Aristotle’s arguments for the Earth’s smallness
In the last chapter of the second book of his De Caelo, Aristotle argues for the Earth’s smallness. In this paper I will differentiate between three relevant ways in which this feature can be understood, and I will explain how Aristotle’s arguments relate to them. I will argue that Aristotle’s arguments, as they are presented in the relevant passages, are not conclusive, and finally I will provide a plausible context which might help understand A…
Does Explaining Past Success Require (Enough) Retention? The Case of Ptolemaic Astronomy
According to selective, retentive, scientific realism, past empirical success may be explained only by the parts of past theories that are responsible of their successful predictions being approximately true, and thus theoretically retained, or approximated, by the parts of posterior theories responsible of the same successful predictions. In this article, we present as case study the transit from Ptolemy’s to Kepler’s astronomy, and their succes…
La astronomía de Ptolomeo y el caso Galileo
Ptolemy ́s astronomy and the Galileo case: two historical and epistemological considerationsThe Galileo case is the most famous example of the encounter betwen science and Faith. The debate was centered, among others, in the field of epistemology and the history of science. The paper shows that the Galilean pretentions of interpreting the heliocentric hypothesis in a realistic way did not constituted a novelty, but rather it was a continuation of…
