Submerged Stone Structures in the Far West of Europe During the Mesolithic/Neolithic Transition (Sein Island, Brittany, France)
International audience
Holocene paleoenvironmental reconstructions in western Brittany (Bay of Brest)
The Bay of Brest (BB, NW France) is a semi-enclosed basin of 180 km2 subject to macro-tidal dynamics and to the fluvial influences of the rivers Aulne and Elorn, which combined drain watersheds of 2600 km2. This coastal environment is subject to natural climate oscillations overlaid on the long-term landscape transformations inherited from the post-glacial sea level rise and increasing anthropogenic forcing since the Neolithic (6.9 ka BP), and es…
Holocene paleoenvironmental reconstructions in western Brittany Bay of Brest
The Bay of Brest (BB) is a shallow estuarine environment in NW France. This semi-enclosed basin of 180 km2 is subject to multiple hydrodynamic factors including the dual influence of oceanic currents and fluvial discharges (Aulne and Elorn main rivers) and resulting in complex hydro-climatic and hydro-sedimentary processes. This study investigates with palynological data (continental: pollen grains and marine: dinoflagellate cysts) two kinds of d…
Limpet shell oxygen isotopes as markers of seasonality in shell middens
δ 18 O analysis on limpet shells allows the determination of harvesting seasonality. • Limpet collecting season showed the alternation of permanent and seasonal occupations. • Limpets were collected all year-round, but more intensively during spring to fill the hungry gap. • Middens are not homogeneous: they were built over different seasons/years. The stable oxygen isotopes ratio (δ 18 O) from marine mollusk carbonated shells is widely used as a…
An interdisciplinary approach to Late/Final Neolithic coastal gallery graves in Brittany, Western France
This article presents an interdisciplinary study of two Late/Final Neolithic gallery graves (Kernic and Lerret) located on the orthwestern coast of Brittany (Western France). These monuments show striking similarities in terms of architectural style and geographical position. This paper aims to provide a better understanding of the construction strategy of these monuments by (i) determining the origin of the megalithic blocks using comparative pe…

What Lies Beneath the Surface? Using Airborne Hyperspectral Imagery to Map Submerged Archaeological Landscapes
Introducing a new method for mapping submerged archaeological landscapes.– Airborne hyperspectral data allows estimation of bottom depth and reflectance for archaeological surveys in shallow waters
Human settlement and landscape dynamics on the coastline south of the Gironde estuary (SW France)
The Gironde estuary in SW France is the largest in Western Europe and has attracted human populations since prehistoric times. From the 1970s to the 1990s, intense archaeological research was undertaken on the long and highly dynamic coastline just south of the estuary mouth. In recent years, the combined action of increased coastal erosion and human pressure has proved a serious threat to the integrity of archaeological sites in the area. As a c…
Observations of postglacial sea‐level rise in northwest European traditions
In preliterate contexts, diverse knowledge was accumulated, processed and communicated orally. Recent research demonstrates that observations of memorable events were transferred in this way for thousands of years sometimes. Much of this information was eventually written down to reach literate audiences, which commonly judge such ‘myths and legends’ to be cultural inventions rather than ancient memories. This study examines 15 ‘submergence stori…
An Early 3d‐map of a Territory? The Bronze Age Carved Slab From Saint‐bélec, Leuhan (Brittany, France)
While early maps are known from all over the world, the key questions always involve: what exactly do they show? And what spatial extent do they cover? In this context, we recently used 3D‐modelling to re‐examine a carved stone slab datable to the Early Bronze Age (c.2150–1600 BC) that was found at Saint‐Bélec in Brittany. We show that the surface of the slab had been shaped in three dimensions to represent the relief of the surrounding landscape…
La carte et le territoire
The intricately carved Saint-Bélec slab found in the Leuhan parish (Finistère) was found within an early Bronze Age barrow in 1900 (fig. 1 and 2). A recent re-examination of the Saint-Bélec slab suggests that its sculptured surface and scattered motifs represent the surrounding landscape and a series of contemporary structures now known from archaeological evidence. When discovered, the slab formed the western side of one of the largest stone-cis…

Humans and their environment on the Médoc coastline from the Mesolithic to the roman period
The northern coast of the Médoc between Soulac-sur-Mer and Montalivet-les-Bains has a rich archaeological heritage that is being directly impacted by coastal erosion. A series of clay-peat palaeosols that formed in ancient estuarine marshes holds evidence of intensive occupation from the Mesolithic until the end of the Roman period. Within this framework, our research focused on the two key sites of La Lède du Gurp (Grayan-et-l’Hôpital) and L’Amé…

Palaeoenvironmental reconstructions during the Meso- to Neolithic transition (9.2–5.3 cal. ka BP) in Northwestern France
Sedimentological, palynological, and micropalaeontological studies carried out throughout the first half of the Holocene, during the Mesolithic/Neolithic transition in the Bay of Brest (i.e. 9200–9000 and 6600–5300 cal. BP) and in the Bay of Douarnenez (i.e. 9200–8400 cal. BP), allowed characterizing coastal environmental changes under the increasing influence of the relative sea-level rise. The gradual flooding of the two studied sites implied a…

The Stone Tidal Fish Weirs of the Molène Archipelago, Iroise Sea, Brittany, Western France
This reports on a project that combined evidence gleaned from aerial photographs, place-names, interviews, topography, LIDAR data, and sonar bathymetry to locate stone tidal fish weirs in the Molène Archipelago. The results were verified by diver and pedestrian visual surveys. Models of Holocene sea-level change allowed a group of possibly Late Mesolithic–Early Neolithic weirs to be recognized, with a second group broadly dated to the later Neoli…

Landscape Evolution and Human Settlement in the Iroise Sea (Brittany, France) during the Neolithic and Bronze Age
The Molène archipelago appears to be particularly rich in Neolithic and Bronze Age remains and an exceptional concentration of megaliths has been brought to light. Several settlements are confirmed by dry-stone structures or by shell middens. These data give precious indications on the occupation chronology of the area. Moreover they allow us, for the first time in Brittany, to reconstruct everyday life during the late Prehistoric period. A prere…
