Storms, ships, and shovels
The Gullåkra wetland is located around 5 km south of the modern city of Lund and around 2.7 km east of the important Iron Age settlement of Uppåkra in Scania, southern Sweden. In the 1840s, a remarkable discovery was made in the wetland: a bronze lur dated to c. 1300 BCE, along with a boat and the bones of a large animal offering. As Bronze Age boats are exceedingly rare, this discovery makes the site highly significant for early Scandinavian mar…
The Marstrand Cannon
Current knowledge concerning the introduction of shipboard artillery in Europe is limited. A small, muzzle-loading cast copper-alloy gun recovered off Marstrand on the west coast of Sweden may, however, provide some important leads regarding this development. Radiocarbon analysis of a piece of cloth from the powder chamber, possibly the remains of a cartouche, suggests a date for the cannon in the fourteenth century, making it probably the earlie…
The Recent Find of a Cog of ca. 1240 in the Fjällbacka Archipelago, Western Sweden
Tracing Trade Routes
The Skaftö wreck of c.1440, situated north of Gothenburg, Sweden, was investigated between the years 2005 and 2009. Investigations revealed a variety of cargoes, such as copper and speiss ingots, barrels with lime and tar, bricks and roof tiles, and oak timber in the form of planks and boards. In order to identify the different cargo types found on the wreck, and, possibly, establish their geographical origin, a variety of analytical methods have…
The Korshamn wreck
During 2016, several undocumented shipwreck sites were exposed on the sandy shores of Halland, western Sweden. One of the most interesting finds is situated in the shallow bay of Korshamn, close to the medieval town of Falkenberg. A limited test excavation revealed a clinker-built vessel over 13 m long. Dendrochronological analysis suggests that the vessel was built shortly after 1168 from Scandinavian wood. Even though it clearly conforms to con…
Reißscheiben from shipwrecks as an indicator for copper qualities produced in the major middle and North European mining districts during the late medieval and early modern period 15th–17th Century AD
The Mollö Cog Re-Examined and Re-Evaluated
As part of a research project on medieval trade and maritime transportation in the former Norwegian province of Bohuslän, western Sweden, a dendrochronological analysis of the so-called Mollö cog was undertaken. The wreck, which was first salvaged in 1980, was previously dated by 14C analysis. Since this provided a nearly 400-year time-span for the building of the vessel, a more precise dating was considered essential. In conjunction with dendroc…
