Using x-ray fluorescence to identify Mazama ash in the Lake Bonneville basin, Utah, USA
Generalizable solutions are needed for identifying volcanic tephra in sedimentary records. We used x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis first to detect volcanic tephra material, followed by electron microprobe analysis to identify the tephra as Mazama ash (7682–7584 cal yr BP) in three sediment cores from the Lake Bonneville basin. We compare these records from varying environmental settings to evaluate tephra presence in the mid-Holocene. We sugges…
Cultural, Demographic and Environmental Dynamics of the Copper and Early Bronze Age in Iberia (3300–1500 BC)
Stable Oxygen Isotope Sourcing of Archaeological Fauna From Chaco Canyon, New Mexico
Modern datasets provide the context necessary for accurate interpretations of isotopic data from archaeological faunal assemblages. In this study, we use the oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) of modern small mammals from Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, to quantify expected isotopic variation in a local population. The δ18O values of local, modern small mammals encompass a broad range (−6.0‰ to 4.8‰ VPDB), which is expected given the extreme seasonal variati…
Changes in North Atlantic Oscillation drove Population Migrations and the Collapse of the Western Roman Empire
Shifts in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) from 1–2 to 0–1 in four episodes increased droughts on the Roman Empire’s periphery and created push factors for migrations. These climatic events are associated with the movements of the Cimbri and Teutones from 113–101 B.C., the Marcomanni and Quadi from 164 to 180 A.D., the Goths in 376 A.D., and the broad population movements of the Migration Period from 500 to 600 A.D. Weakening of the NAO in th…
Regional Demographic Dynamics in the Neolithic Transition in Iberia
Geochemical evidence for the use of lead in Prehispanic metallurgy at El Purgatorio, Casma Valley, Peru
The 5.1 ka aridization event, expansion of piñon-juniper woodlands, and the introduction of maize ( Zea mays ) in the American Southwest
Pollen analysis is frequently used to build climate and environmental histories. A distinct Holocene pollen series exists for Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. This study reports linear modeling and hypothesis testing of long distance dispersal pollen from radiocarbon-dated packrat middens which reveal strong relationships between piñon pine ( Pinus edulis) and ponderosa pine ( Pinus ponderosa). Ponderosa pollen dominates midden pollen assemblages during…

The use of radiocarbon-derived Δ13C as a paleoclimate indicator
