Methodologies for the identification of historic forest pathogen dynamics
The scale, severity, and synchronicity of recent outbreaks of forest pests such as bark beetles (Coleoptera, Scolytinae) and defoliators (Lepidoptera, Choristoneura) within coniferous forest ecosystems of North America, Europe, and Asia are widely regarded as ‘unprecedented’. Despite such devastating outbreak occurrence in recent times, very little is known about historic outbreak occurrence. Traditional methods of reconstructing historic outbrea…
Tree line shifts, changing vegetation assemblages and permafrost dynamics on Galdhøpiggen (Jotunheimen, Norway) over the past ~4400 years
An environmental reconstruction based on palynological evidence preserved in peat was carried out to examine late-Holocene alpine tree line dynamics in the context of past climatic changes on Galdhøpiggen (Jotunheimen, southern Norway). We analysed a peat core taken from a mire at the present-day tree line (1000 m a.s.l.), c. 450 m downslope from the lower limit of sporadic permafrost. We adopted a combination of commonly used indicators of speci…
Detecting the provenance of Galápagos non-native pollen
The influence of non-native pollen, both long-distance transported and from introduced taxa, on reconstruction of past vegetation is not often well quantified in palynological investigations. We examined both fossil and modern samples from the Galápagos Islands, a remote archipelago lying 1000 km from the nearest continent. These islands are particularly well-suited for such an assessment, as (1) the native flora is limited and well-known, enabli…
Temporal stability in bristlecone pine tree-ring stable oxygen isotope chronologies over the last two centuries
The absolutely dated bristlecone pine ( Pinus longaeva) tree-ring chronology spans almost 9000 years, offering great potential for inferring past environmental change. Existing ring width chronologies have been widely used to produce some of the most influential millennial length temperature reconstructions for the Northern Hemisphere. A recently published δ 18 O record from two bristlecone pine trees growing at Methuselah Walk in the White Mount…

The impact of tourism and reindeer herding on forest vegetation at Saariselkä, Finnish Lapland
A high-resolution peat profile from the vicinity of Saariselkä (68°25.24'N, 27°25.19'E), a large tourist centre in northern Finnish Lapland, was sampled continuously at near annual resolution to a depth of 22 cm in order to interpret the changes in pollen assemblages and vegetation resulting from human interference and reindeer herding. Fifteen AMS dates were wiggle-matched with the atmospheric 14 C calibration curve. The resulting age—depth mode…
Holocene fire in the Scottish Highlands
It has been hypothesized that the mid-Holocene decline of pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) woodland in the Scottish Highlands may have been the result of a change in the fire regime of the region. Little is known about the Holocene fire history of these forests, although a number of factors suggest that fire may have played a significant role. This study examines whether fire was a prevalent factor in Scotland over the course of the Holocene and its re…
