Demographic Momentum and Fertility Responses to Pronatalist Policies
Russia's Maternal Capital policy initially increased total fertility rates, stimulating much discussion on whether it would result in more births or only earlier births. Effects of that policy upon different ethnic groups within Russia, however, have not received systematic attention. Varying demographic, socioeconomic and cultural characteristics of ethnic groups in Russia provide a unique opportunity to assess policy responsiveness, especially …
Preference for Sons and Daughters in Developing Countries
The paper explores the relative roles of men’s and women’s sex composition preferences for women’s desire to stop childbearing in developing countries. The analysis covers 45 countries, using Demographic and Health Survey couples datasets from the years 2010 to 2021. Probabilities of women’s desire to stop childbearing are considered when the sex composition of children matches the ideals of both the woman and her partner, of the woman or her par…

Son preference, gender asymmetries and parity progressions
The paper considers son preference effects оn actual fertility behaviour in Kyrgyzstan, a post-Soviet country of Central Asia. Using data from the DHS2012 and DHS1997, I argue that risks of transitions to parities from the second to the fifth are significantly higher among women with no sons. Furthermore, the relation of risks of parity progressions to sex composition of children already born is not generally stronger in families with strict gend…

Post-Soviet traditionalism, human capital, and fertility
The paper aims to contribute to studies of women's human capital and fertility in post-Soviet societies. The post-Soviet regions are a particularly interesting setting to study this question because they have combined traditional family organization and rapid social change in recent decades. Based on evidence from Karachay-Cherkessia (Russia), we examine whether elements of a woman's human capital can account for her fertility behavior in the con…
Survey Responses on Desired Fertility in Patriarchal Societies
The paper deals with a problem regularly faced by survey studies of patriarchal communities, i.e. communities with a high authority of senior generations and a low level of women’s autonomy. In such communities, female respondents might give untruthful answers to survey questions in order to fit norms which are treated as obligatory or highly desirable in the community. The situation causes a "community bias" in survey results. The task of the pa…

On the Lexical Distribution of Agent-preserving and Object-preserving Transitivity Alternations
This article gives a cognitively based account of polysemous transitivity alternations, which are Agent-preserving with some verbs and Object-preserving with others. The data from three languages – Asiatic Eskimo, Boumaa Fijian and Bambara – are presented. It is argued that the mechanism of the distribution of the meanings of these TAs is semantic in nature and does not depend upon the coding technique used by a language
