Landscape archaeology in a contested space
This paper presents the activities carried out in the context of the public outreach framework of the Settled and Sacred Landscapes of Cyprus (SeSaLaC) and the Unlocking the Sacred Landscapes of Cyprus (UnSaLa-CY) projects of the Archaeological Research Unit of the University of Cyprus in a former conflict zone, the Xeros River valley (Larnaca district) in Cyprus. The public outreach initiatives were born out of the long-term aim of the projects …
Cyprus and Sardinia at the Transition from the Bronze to the Iron Age
In the framework of this contribution, and taking a macro-historic sacred landscapes approach, we established a comparative project analysing in parallel the development of sacred landscapes of two mega-islands, Cyprus and Sardinia, at the transition from the Bronze to the Iron Age. In both Cyprus and Sardinia, the period between the 12th and 8th centuries BC seems to have been a time when re-negotiations of individual, societal, and political id…
Religious and Insular Identities in Context
The introductory article offers a general overview of the highly complicated concept of insularity as discussed variously in historical and archaeological discourse. It also provides a context of sacred landscapes and religious identities, when discussed in relation to insularity. Finally, it outlines the general themes discussed in this Special Issue and situates the Unlocking Sacred Landscapes (UnSaLa) research network and the current volume in…
Digital Humanities and Ritual Space
In this editorial article for the Special Issue on Unlocking Sacred Landscapes: Digital Humanities and Ritual Space , we introduce the applicability of digital humanities to the study of ritual space. The Issue focuses on digital approaches both to ritual space and to artefacts relating to ritual practice and cult. The terms ritual and cult are used broadly to include sanctuaries, temples and churches, as well as the domestic and funerary spheres…
Popular Religion and Material Responses to Pandemic
This article explores the materiality of the Orthodox Christian cult of the Epitaphios on Good Friday of 2020 when, during the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and isolation were deemed the most effective means of protecting societies from exposure to the virus. Epitaphios is a metonym that references a venerated object, a decorated cloth or wooden icon bearing the image of Christ prepared for burial. It is placed upon a wooden bier, represen…
Hellenistic and Roman Terracottas
Edited by G. Papantoniou, D. Michaelides and M. Dikomitou-Eliadou, Hellenistic and Roman Terracottas is a collection of 29 chapters with an introduction presenting diverse and innovative approaches (archaeological, stylistic, iconographic, functional, contextual, digital, and physicochemical) in the study of ancient terracottas across the Mediterranean and the Near East, from the Hellenistic period to Late Antiquity. The 34 authors advocate colle…
Sacred Landscapes and the Territoriality of Iron Age Cypriot Polities
This article contributes to the ongoing debate on the relationship between sanctuaries and the territoriality of the Iron Age polities of Cyprus. The sanctuary site of Vavla-Kapsalaes is used as a case study to test hypotheses regarding the connection between extra-urban sacred space and the formation of political and cultural identities. A combination of archaeological and geographic data is implemented in geographic information system (GIS) ana…
The employment of pXRF analysis for the qualitative study of Hellenistic and Roman terracottas from the House of Orpheus in Nea Paphos
In recent years, portable X-Ray Fluorescence (pXRF) has become one of the most commonly used analytical tools for determining, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the chemical composition of a variety of materials of archaeological and historical significance. The term “qualitative” refers to the characterisation of materials based on some quality or characteristic, rather than on some quantity or measured value, as in the case of a “quantitat…
Cypriot Autonomous Polities at the Crossroads of Empire
This article explores the relationship between power and cult, not in the age of the Cypriot city-kingdoms per se but rather in the context of a changing political landscape that eventually led to the abolition of the autonomous polities and the establishment of a new order by the Ptolemaic Empire. In particular, this contribution explores some of the Cypro-Classical kings' internal responses to the changing political map of the Mediterranean, su…
Cyprus from Basileis to Strategos
Sanctuaries and religion were instrumental in forming the worldview of the ancient Cypriots, and one would expect that social power relations, meanings, and identities were expressed through the holistic concept of sacred landscapes. This contribution primarily discusses the change in the use and perception of sacred landscapes, which were originally constructed in the era of the Cypriot basileis (kings) but continued to function in a new politic…
“Revisiting” Soloi-Cholades
