When we fight, we win”
Migrant domestic workers have formed the backbone of Canada’s care economy, filling gaps in care and performing this undervalued work since the inception of the settler-colonial state. Premilla Nad...
An opportunity for gender transformation? UN Women’s policy response to Covid-19
Pandemics disproportionately affect women due to their dominant roles in healthcare, caregiving, and industries vulnerable to public health policies. Women face higher infection risks, greater unpaid care burdens, and job losses during crises. Violence against women and disrupted access to healthcare, including sexual and reproductive services, also increase. Despite clear evidence of these effects, global pandemic responses have historically bee…
Effects of a gender-responsive maternal, newborn and child health program on health and economic outcomes during Covid-19 in Kenya
The Chamas program effectively sustained maternal and child health practices during the COVID-19 pandemic through adapted CHW support but showed limited ability to protect members from economic hardship. This demonstrates both the resilience and limitations of community-based interventions during widespread crises. Our results highlight the need for robust governmental support and social protection measures to address underlying economic vulnerab…
Suck it up, keep going’? A critical disabilities analysis with strategic recommendations for supporting the wellbeing among people living with long Covid
Long COVID has been described as a ‘mass disabling event’, affecting over 400 million people worldwide. In the context of evolving medical knowledge around this novel condition, there is little research on how the broader determinants of health might interact with symptoms to influence the lived experience of people with Long COVID. This paper contributes a critical disability studies perspective to explore the structural determinants of well-bei…
Not Having the Energy to Even Live
Long COVID is defined as the persistence of symptoms three or more months after infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2/COVID‐19). A growing body of research documents the economic and social implications of this relatively new health condition, but, to date, only a handful of studies have considered the effects of Long COVID on caregiving (defined here as the unpaid care work provided in the home or community b…
Social determinants of mental health among older adolescent girls living in urban informal settlements in Kenya and Nigeria during the Covid-19 pandemic
The health burden due to mental health has historically been underestimated with focus on communicable diseases and deaths and little consideration of disability and comorbidity effects of poor mental health. Recent data show increasing trends of mental health disorders as a share of global health burdens and vulnerability of adolescents. This paper aims to explore social determinants of mental health as experienced by adolescent girls, drawing a…
Multifaceted precarity
The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected those who face historical and ongoing marginalization. In centering pandemic experience of recent immigrant women in the accommodation and food services sector in Canada, we examine how their precarious work translated to experiences of work precarity and wellbeing. This paper illuminates how pre-existing and ongoing marginalization are reproduced during a health crisis for those at the intersecti…
Gendered and differential effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on paid and unpaid work in Nigeria
The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent policy responses continue to have widespread social and economic effects across the globe. These effects are not experienced equally. Taking Lagos as a case study, we explored gendered and differential effects of COVID-19 and subsequent policy responses on paid and unpaid work. Using an intersectionality framework and qualitative methodology, we analyze how social divisions interacted, contributing to individu…
Integrating Gender-Based Analysis Plus into Policy Responses to Covid-19
Recognition of the differential effects of COVID-19 on women has led to calls for greater application of gender-based analysis within policy responses. Beyond pointing out where such policies are implemented, there is little analysis of the effects of efforts to integrate gender-based analysis into the COVID-19 response. Drawing on interviews informing a lived experienced approach to policy analysis, this article asks if, how, and to what effect …
Reconceptualizing successful pandemic preparedness and response
Pandemic preparedness and COVID-19 response indicators focus on public health outcomes (such as infections, case fatalities, and vaccination rates), health system capacity, and/or the effects of the pandemic on the economy, yet this avoids more political questions regarding how responses were mobilized. Pandemic preparedness country rankings have been called into question due to their inability to predict COVID-19 response and outcomes, and COVID…
