  • Sex‐Based Wage Gaps in Nursing

Open Access•Pablo Estrada, Markowitz et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial Relations A Journal of…•2026

Men comprise a small fraction of the nurse labor force, yet across the distribution of wages, male nurses earn more than female nurses. In this paper, we use nurse survey data to decompose the sex‐based wage gap and to explore why male nurses earn a premium in a female‐dominated profession. We consider the role of traditional factors such as human capital and family structure, along with explanations that are more specific to nursing. Results ind…

  • Nurse practitioner scope of practice and patient harm

    Open Access•Markowitz, Andrew J D Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2023

Many states have recently changed their scope of practice laws and granted full practice authority to nurse practitioners, allowing them to practice without oversight from physicians. Physician groups have argued against this change, citing patient safety concerns. In this paper, we use a ratio‐in‐ratio approach to evaluate whether the transition to full practice authority results in harm to patients as proxied by malpractice payouts and adverse …

  • Effects of State-Level Earned Income Tax Credit Laws on Birth Outcomes by Race and Ethnicity

    Open Access•Kelli A Komro, Markowitz et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2019

Purpose: Health disparities persist in birth outcomes by mother's income, education, and race in the United States. Disadvantaged mothers may experience benefit from supplements to family income, such as the earned income tax credit (EITC). We examined the effects of state-level EITCs on birth outcomes among women with a high school education or less, stratified by race and ethnicity. Methods: A quasi-experimental multistate and multiyear differe…

  • Effects of changes in earned income tax credit

    Open Access•Alexander C Wagenaar, Melvin D Livingston et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2019

Poverty has numerous deleterious effects on health, and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is the major policy tool used to alleviate poverty in the U.S. We evaluate effects of four distinct changes in earned income tax credit law in Washington, DC on maternal behaviors and infant outcomes. An interrupted time-series design was used with 312 monthly measures from 1990 through 2015 analyzed in 2018 (total n = 225,933 births). States with no EITC …

Kelli A Komro, Melvin D Livingston et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2016•Citada por: 14•Referências: 7

Objectives. To investigate the effects of state minimum wage laws on low birth weight and infant mortality in the United States. Methods. We estimated the effects of state-level minimum wage laws using a difference-in-differences approach on rates of low birth weight ( Results. Across all models, a dollar increase in the minimum wage above the federal level was associated with a 1% to 2% decrease in low birth weight births and a 4% decrease in po…

  • The Effects of Mandated Health Insurance Benefits for Autism on Out-of-Pocket Costs and Access to Treatment

Open Access•Pinka Chatterji, Sandra L Decker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2015•Citada por: 5

As of 2014, 37 states have passed mandates requiring many private health insurance policies to cover diagnostic and treatment services for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). We explore whether ASD mandates are associated with out-of-pocket costs, financial burden, and cost or insurance-related problems with access to treatment among privately insured children with special health care needs (CSHCNs). We use difference-in-difference and difference-i…

  • Is youth smoking responsive to cigarette prices? Evidence from low- and middle-income countries

Dobrinka Kostova, Deliana Kostova et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2011

Cigarette price is an important determinant of smoking. The estimated price elasticity of smoking participation is -0.74, and the estimated price elasticity of conditional cigarette demand is approximately -1.37. The total price elasticity of cigarette demand is -2.11, implying that an increase in price of 10% would reduce youth cigarette consumption by 21.1% at the mean

  • A cure for crime? Psycho‐pharmaceuticals and crime trends

    Open Access•Dave E Marcotte, Markowitz•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2010•Citada por: 5•Referências: 4

In this paper we consider possible links between the diffusion of new pharmaceuticals used for treating mental illness and crime rates. We describe recent trends in crime and review the evidence showing that mental illness is a clear risk factor both for criminal behavior and victimization. We summarize the development of a number of new pharmaceutical therapies for the treatment of mental illness that came into wide use during the “great America…

  • Incentives in Obesity and Health Insurance

Open Access•Inas Rashad Kelly, Markowitz et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2009

Health insurance is widely regarded as essential for financing the production of good health, but is insurance always beneficial for our health? Ex ante moral hazard may induce individuals with insurance to engage in behaviors that they otherwise would not undertake in the absence of insurance. Using data from the 1993-2002 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we attempt to isolate the effects of ex ante moral hazard to determine the poten…
