  • Layer I of the Mira Site

Open Access•N Stepanchuk, Vadym Stepanchuk•ARTICLE•Archaeology and Early History of…•2026

A pilot study of Layer I at the Mira site applies diacritical analysis to reconstruct flake-tool transformation under severe flint scarcity. The apparently «flake-like» character proves largely secondary: initial blanks were often blades or bladey flakes, while reworking and fragmentation generated secondary blanks with flake proportions. Directional elaboration is reflected in increased linear and angular edges, more combined tools, and more fre…

  • The 2019 Lower Palaeolithic finds from the Harema tract (Skhidnytsia)

Open Access•Mykola Bandrivskyi, Yurii Veklych et al.•ARTICLE•Materials and Studies on…•2025

The site of Skhidnytsia (Harema tract) is located on a dissected slope of the Skhidnytsia River valley. The cultural horizon was identified within a sequence of sandy and clayey deposits, lacking signs of significant reworking. The artefact-bearing layer lies in situ, without traces of water transport or secondary slope redeposition. The lithic assemblage is technologically and typologically uniform, consisting predominantly of small and, mainly,…

  • Lower Paleolithic surveys in western Ukraine (2017)

Open Access•N Stepanchuk, Yurii Veklych•ARTICLE•Materials and Studies on…•2025

Between 2017 and 2018, as part of the project «The Earliest Paleolithic Sites of Ukraine in the Context of the Initial Colonization of Europe», a pilot survey was undertaken to search for evidence of early human presence across various regions of the country. The project aimed to identify new and re-examine already known Early Paleolithic sites in the valleys of the Southern Bug, Smotrych, Dniester, Dnipro, and Siverskyi Donets. The research also…

  • Examining the Association between Pigment Residues and Potlid-like Cracking

Open Access•N Stepanchuk, Oleksandr O Naumenko et al.•ARTICLE•Arheologia•2025

The article examines flint artefacts with traces of pigment discovered in 1993 in layer II of the Zaskelna V site (Crimea), focusing on one specimen with rare incomplete potlid-like cracking and associated ochrerich residues. An initial hypothesis that the cracking was caused by heated pigment-containing adhesive was not supported experimentally. Instead, the scar likely resulted from localised sudden cooling, while the pigment adhered later to t…

  • The Earliest Evidence of Deliberate Ivory Processing Dates Back to Around 0.4 Million Years Ago

    Open Access•N Stepanchuk, Oleksandr O Naumenko•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 30

This paper presents data on ivory micro‐artifacts discovered in the Middle Pleistocene (MIS 11) horizons of the multilayered Lower Paleolithic site of Medzhibozh A in western Ukraine. These micro‐artifacts provide the earliest known reliable evidence for the deliberate modification of proboscidean ivory material using bipolar‐on‐anvil knapping and trimming techniques. Medzhibozh A, situated in the upper reaches of the Southern Bug Valley, has yie…

  • Evidence of bipolar knapping of mammoth ivory at Medzhybizh A

    Open Access•Oleksandr O Naumenko, N Stepanchuk•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2025•Referências: 4

This paper presents the results of a technological and experimental study of mammoth ivory artefacts recovered from Layer II–I of the Medzhybizh A Lower Palaeolithic site in western Ukraine. Ivory is an unusual material in prehistoric knapping traditions, especially in earlier periods. Our experiments demonstrate that the workability of ivory depends strongly on its preservation state: over-dried specimens are brittle and fragment easily, while b…

  • Lower Palaeolithic Site Kamianka in Eastern Ukraine

    Open Access•N Stepanchuk, Yurii Veklych•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2025•Referências: 1

The paper presents an initial attempt to assess ancient findings in Eastern Ukraine through a synthesis of archaeological and geomorphological data. It focuses on a newly discovered Lower Palaeolithic site on a valley slope of a right‐bank tributary of the Seversky Donets River, cutting into the Jarkiv stage terrace (Pliocene) of the Ukrainian stratigraphic scale. Flint, quartzite, quartz flakes, and modified pebbles were found in the clastic mat…

  • Probable Evidence of Magical Practice from Layer I of the Upper Palaeolithic Site of Mira

    N Stepanchuk, Vadim Stepanchuk•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2022

The Mira site is a stratified Upper Palaeolithic site in the Dnieper valley. The stratigraphic sequence includes three layers with archaeological finds from the period between 31,000 and 28,000 cal BP. The upper layer (layer I) yielded the remains of a seasonal autumn-winter settlement of horse hunters. The composition of flake tools suggests analogies with the Gorodtsovskaya culture of the Middle Don. The presence of bifacial tools and Aurignaci…

  • A new aspect of post-depositional alterations of lithic artefacts

    Open Access•N Stepanchuk, Oleksandr O Naumenko•ARTICLE•Materials and Studies on…•2022•Citada por: 3•Referências: 21

Flint artefacts have been identified in the materials of the Lower Palaeolithic sites of Medzhibozh, which have experienced the effects of post-depositional alterations (PDA). We suggest a particular combination of anthropogenic and natural effects on lithic artefacts. In the vicinity of Medzhibozh in the Khmelnytskyi region in the West of Ukraine, several multilayered stratified Lower Palaeolithic sites are currently known. Artefacts and accompa…
