  • Complex problems, local solutions

    Open Access•James Nobles, L Livsey et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2026•Referências: 1

Local systems approaches to obesity prevention are emerging across the UK, but implementation is largely in early stages. Whilst the complexity of obesity is widely recognised, more support is required to help local teams intervene within the obesogenic environment

  • Flammability of native and invasive alien plants common to the Cape Floristic Region and beyond

Open Access•Tineke Kraaij, Samukelisiwe T Msweli et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2024

High-impact mega-fires in many temperate forests and shrublands of the world have called for pre-emptive approaches to mitigate fire risk. Comparative appraisals of the characteristics and flammability of plant fuels can inform fire risk predictions and vegetation management efforts in the wildland-urban interface of such fire-prone regions. Prompted by recent extreme fires in the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa, we assessed the flammabilit…

  • A new research strategy for integrating studies of paleoclimate, paleoenvironment, and paleoanthropology

    Open Access•C W Marean, Robert J Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2015

Paleoanthropologists (scientists studying human origins) universally recognize the evolutionary significance of ancient climates and environments for understanding human origins. Even those scientists working in recent phases of human evolution, when modern humans evolved, agree that hunter-gatherer adaptations are tied to the way that climate and environment shape the food and technological resource base. The result is a long tradition of paleoa…

  • Foraging potential of underground storage organ plants in the southern Cape, South Africa

Elzanne Singels, A Potts et al.•PREPRINT•2015

Underground storage organs (USOs) serve as a staple source of carbohydrates for many hunter-gatherer societies and they feature prominently in discussions of diets of early modern humans. While the way of life of hunter-gatherers in South Africa’s Cape is no longer in existence, there is extensive ethnographic, historical and archaeological evidence of hunter-gatherers’ use of such plants as foodstuffs. This is to be expected, given that the Cape…

  • Seasonal availability of edible underground and aboveground carbohydrate resources to human foragers on the Cape south coast, South Africa

    Jan C De Vynck, Richard M Cowling et al.•ARTICLE•2015•Citada por: 27•Referências: 25

The coastal environments of South Africa's Cape Floristic Region (CFR) provide some of the earliest and most abundant evidence for the emergence of cognitively modern humans. In particular, the south coast of the CFR provided a uniquely diverse resource base for hunter-gatherers, which included marine shellfish, game, and carbohydrate-bearing plants, especially those with Underground Storage Organs (USOs). It has been hypothesized that these reso…

  • Stone Age people in a changing South African Greater Cape Floristic Region

    C W Marean, Hayley C Cawthra et al.•CHAPTER•Fynbos•2014

The human origins story (palaeoanthropology) is often set in the African Palaeotropics, yet the Greater Cape Floristic Region (GCFR) plays an internationally prominent role that surpasses its small size. Some of the earliest evidence for the complex behaviours associated with fully modern humans is found here, with prehistoric stone age hunter-gatherers adapting to a unique and changing environment from about 1 million years ago to near-present. …

  • Achieving high and equitable coverage of adolescent HPV vaccine in Scotland

Katy Sinka, Kimberley Kavanagh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2014•Citada por: 1•Referências: 18

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: The national immunisation records of over 220,000 girls offered vaccine in the routine or catch-up programme of the Human papillomavirus (HPV) programme in Scotland were analysed. Descriptive statistics and multilevel modelling were used to determine individual and organisational factors associated with uptake. Age, school year, school denomination, deprivation and, for school-leavers, mode of delivery were explored. Addit…

  • Seeing the Ancients

    A Potts•ARTICLE•History Workshop Journal•2013

This book makes some very large and intriguing claims that in the end it does not quite sustain. Its significance lies less in the details of the new understanding of ancient Greek culture it purports to offer, by taking a visual rather than a textually mediated approach to ancient artefacts, than in the provocative nature of these claims, which encourage one to think afresh about the benefits of looking closely at things: how this can bring to l…

  • Stable isotope and 14 C study of biogenic calcrete in a termite mound, Western Cape, South Africa, and its palaeoenvironmental significance

    Open Access•A Potts, Alastair J Potts et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

Late Quaternary terrestrial climate records from the semi-arid zone of the Western Cape of South Africa are rare. However, palaeoenvironmental information may be inferred from ancient termite mounds of the region. Calcrete lenses in these mounds have δ 13 C and δ 18 O values that show systematic changes with radiocarbon dates, which range from 33,629–36,709 to 21,676–23,256 cal yr BP. These dates confirm that these heuweltjies had been present in…
