    Al sinds de 16de eeuw zijn er in Vlaanderen leerboeken Nederlands als vreemde taal en als tweede taal voorhanden. Aanvankelijk ging het om vertalende conversatieboeken voor soldaten en handelaars, maar al in de 19de eeuw kwamen er grammatica-vertaalmethodes naar het model van klassieke talen.
