  • Changes in Holocene climate and the intensity of Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds based on a high-resolution palynological record from sub-Antarctic South Georgia

    Open Access•Stephanie L Strother, Ulrich Salzmann et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Citada por: 2•Referências: 9

Sub-Antarctic South Georgia is a key region for studying climate variability in the Southern Hemisphere, because of its position at the core of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly Wind belt and between the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and the Polar Frontal Zone. Here, we present a 5.8-m long high-resolution pollen record from Fan Lake on Annenkov Island dominated by local sub-polar vegetation, with Acaena and Poaceae being present throughout the la…

  • The Dahomey Gap

    Open Access•Ulrich Salzmann, Philipp Hoelzmann•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Citada por: 16•Referências: 8

The Dahomey Gap, a savanna corridor interrupting the zonal West African rain forest, did not exist during the mid-Holocene. The pollen diagram from Lac Sélé (7°9'N, 2°26'E) indicates that in southern Benin a semi-evergreen rainforest prevailed between c. 8400 and 4500 cal. yr BP. The mid-Holocene marine transgression caused a spread of mangrove forest along the inland lagoons. Pollen analysis and geochemistry indicate that the Dahomey Gap became …

  • Late Quaternary Climate and Vegetation of the Sudanian Zone of Northeast Nigeria

Open Access•Ulrich Salzmann, Philipp Hoelzmann et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2002

The Lake Tilla crater lake in northeastern Nigeria (10°23′N, 12°08′E) provides a ca. 17,000 14 C yr multiproxy record of the environmental history of a Sudanian savanna in West Africa. Evaluation of pollen, diatoms, and sedimentary geochemistry from cores suggests that dry climatic conditions prevailed throughout the late Pleistocene. Before the onset of the Holocene, the slow rise in lake levels was interrupted by a distinct dry event between ca…
