  • Corona Photographs in Monsoonal Semi‐arid Environments

    Open Access•Francesc C Conesa, Marco Madella et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2014•Citada por: 2•Referências: 11

Here we illustrate a ground map approach that uses orthorectified CORONA KH4B images and declassified topographical maps to study historical land‐use dynamics and to help planning archaeological survey in the monsoonal semi‐arid alluvial plains of North Gujarat, India. In spite of its generalized use in archaeological applications, CORONA photographs have rarely been used in Indian archaeological contexts. The methods discuss a cost‐effective and…

  • Contextualizing Early Urbanization

    Open Access•T J Wilkinson, Graham Philip et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of World Prehistory•2014•Citada por: 76•Referências: 25

This paper employs data from selected sample survey areas in the northern Fertile Crescent to demonstrate how initial urbanization developed along several pathways. The first, during the Late Chalcolithic period, was within a dense pattern of rural settlement. There followed a profound shift in settlement pattern that resulted in the formation of large walled or ramparted sites (‘citadel cities’) associated with a more dynamic phase of urbanizati…

  • Late Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age Landscapes of Settlement and Mobility in the Middle Euphrates

Tony J Wilkinson, Nikolaos Galiatsatos et al.•ARTICLE•Levant•2012

Urbanization occupies an ambiguous position in the development of the Middle Euphrates region of Turkey and Syria, in part because the area frequently formed a contested region between other stronger Early Bronze Age polities. This paper aims to review evidence from a series of archaeological surveys to illustrate trends in settlement during the 4th and 3rd millennium BC. Re-analysis of survey data from three exemplar regions in the Middle Euphra…

  • Sasanian Walls, Hinterland Fortresses and Abandoned Ancient Irrigated Landscapes

Hamid Omrani Rckavandi, Elizabeth Sauer et al.•ARTICLE•Iran•2008•Citada por: 13•Referências: 3

The 2007 season yielded significant new insights into settlement expansion into the land north of the line of the Gorgan Wall and the later abandonment of these sites in the steppe, prior to the construction of the Wall. It also provided us with a better understanding of Sasanian hydraulic engineering and the date and strategic role of large square fortifications south of this linear barrier. Via underwater archaeology, we explored installations …

  • Corona satellite photography

    Open Access•Graham Philip, D Donoghue et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2002•Citada por: 20•Referências: 5

The declassification of CORONA high-resolution space photography has made a valuable new resource available for the study of ancient landscapes. Using a recent case-study from Syria, examples are given of various ways in which CORONA imagery can significantly enhance regional survey work
