  • The Effect of Code-Switching Experience on the Neural Response Elicited to a Sentential Code Switch

    Open Access•Anne M Blackburn, Nicole Y Y Wicha•ARTICLE•Languages•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 106

Switching between languages, or codeswitching, is a cognitive ability that multilinguals can perform with ease. This study investigates whether codeswitching during sentence reading affects early access to meaning, as indexed by the robust brain response called the N400. We hypothesize that the brain prioritizes the meaning of the word during comprehension with codeswitching costs emerging at a different stage of processing. Event-related potenti…

  • The contributions of oral language to English reading outcomes among young bilingual students in the United States

    Open Access•Becky H Huang, Lisa M Bedore et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Aims and objectives/purpose/research questions: The current study examined the language-reading relationship for bilingual students in two grade levels (grades 1 and 3) and for two reading outcomes (decoding and comprehension) to understand the contribution of oral language in English reading. The study also explored the potential mediating role of oral language between language use, reading frequency, and reading outcomes. Design/methodology/app…

  • Anticipating Words and Their Gender

    Open Access•Nicole Y Y Wicha, Eva M Moreno et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience•2004

Recent studies indicate that the human brain attends to and uses grammatical gender cues during sentence comprehension. Here, we examine the nature and time course of the effect of gender on word-by-word sentence reading. Event related brain potentials were recorded to an article and noun, while native Spanish speakers read medium to high-constraint Spanish sentences for comprehension. The noun either fit the sentence meaning or not, and matched …
