The roundtable gathers specialists dedicated to thinking through the Afro-Gothic as a conceptual approach to black aesthetics and as a theoretical framework. In the spirit of camaraderie and intellectual curiosity, contributors consider meanings of the Afro-Gothic from various disciplines and diasporic perspectives. The participants discuss the ways in which horror, haunting, the uncanny, the monstrous, and the fantastic are manifest in black aes…

  • The blacker the ink

Frances K Gateward, John Jennings•BOOK•The blacker the ink•2015

When many think of comic books the first thing that comes to mind are caped crusaders and spandex-wearing super-heroes. Perhaps, inevitably, these images are of white men (and more rarely, women). It was not until the 1970s that African American superheroes such as Luke Cage, Blade, and others emerged. But as this exciting new collection reveals, these superhero comics are only one small component in a wealth of representations of black character…

  • The Cowboy Legend

    John Jennings, John H Jennings•BOOK•Cowboy Legend•2015

The cowboy, as perhaps no other figure, has captured the imagination of North Americans for over a century. Before Owen Wister's publication of The Virginian in 1902, the image of the cowboy was essentially that of the dime novel - a rough, violent, one-dimensional drifter, or the stage cowboy variety found in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West show. Wister's novel was to transform, almost overnight, this image of the cowboy. Soon after its publicatio…

  • The Opium Empire

    John M Jennings, John Jennings•BOOK•The Opium Empire•1997

The International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE) found Japan guilty of deliberately promoting drug abuse as a weapon to further its imperialistic aims in Asia. This study provides the historical context behind the IMTFE's findings from the annexation of Taiwan in 1895 to the end of World War II. Given the extent to which drug use permeated the politics, economy, and culture of Asia, it was inevitable that Japan's rise as an imperial p…

  • The Forgotten Plague

    Open Access•John M Jennings, John Jennings•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•1995

One of the most neglected aspects of the history of Korea under Japanese colonial rule is the significant role of the drug trade during the colonial period. Korea emerged as a major producer of opium and narcotics in the 1920s, and in the 1930s became an important supplier to the opium monopoly created by the Japanese-sponsored Manchukuo regime. The latter development sparked an international controversy due to Manchukuo's unsavory reputation in …

is thorough and suggestive, though the findings are more consequential in some than in others. A striking common characteristic is the enlightening knowledge of European affairs against which the details in the colonial scene are set. Students of the Revolutionary period will find the volume challenging to further efforts in that field. Thus the work, it is safe to say, will fulfill its double function. It is a worthy tribute to Professor Greene …
