A Collaborative Approach To Research Utilization
The most essential issue which applied anthropology faces is how to maximize the possibility that the data anthropologists produce will be used to maintain or improve the well-being of those whom they study. This study of poor, black, urban families relates mothers' views of the ideal relationship between their sons and the world to the sons' academic achievement. In open-ended interviews, mothers of high achievers express ideals for their sons that emphasize self-motivated, active, learning engagement with the world; mothers of low achievers express ideals that emphasize constraint, isolation, and adult control. This paper reports and evaluates a strategy for working with disadvantaged families whose preschool children are showing signs of slow development.
