Large Rivers, Small Rivers
The spatial distribution of Chalcolithic settlements in the East Lower Danube Plain (SE Romania) shows markedly higher densities along small river valleys with low modern discharges, such as the Călmățui, Mostiștea, and Teleorman, which originate in the upper plains (150–300 m a.s.l.). In contrast, valleys of larger Carpathian-sourced rivers (e.g., Buzău, Ialomița, Argeș), host far fewer settlements. Our research explores whether these patterns r…
Absolute dating of the Early/Pre-state Medieval date burial features in Muntenia (the 7th–14th century AD)
Our aim here is to firstly address the burial dynamics preceding the establishment of the medieval state south of the Carpathians from the view of absolute dating. In order to achieve this undertaking, we have taken samples from burial features spanning a period of more than seven centuries (the 7th–14th century) and delivered these for investigation with several laboratories. From the ‘Avars’ to ‘proto-Bulgarians’, ‘Pechenegs’ to the ‘Late Cuman…

From chance to understanding
This article presents a case study that demonstrates the potential research value of metal-detected finds—when responsibly reported and properly contextualized—for advancing archaeological knowledge. Focusing on the prehistoric hoard from Cocoșești (southern Romania), accidentally discovered by a metal detectorist searching for pigeon leg rings, this study emphasizes that, despite the absence of a clear stratigraphic context, a careful analysis o…
Tumuli preistorici cercetaţi în anul 2024 în localitatea Păuleşti (jud. Prahova) / Prehistoric burial mounds investigated in 2024 in Păuleşti (Prahova County)
In 2024, three prehistoric burial mounds were excavated in Păulești, uncovering four inhumation graves : three adult males and one subadult. Only the subadult grave contained grave goods — two silver hair rings. Red ochre was present in two graves, either scattered over the bones or placed nearby. One mound revealed a pre‐Yamnaya to Yamnaya sequence, while the other two each contained a Yamnaya grave. The Yamnaya graves date to the early 3rd mill…
Layer by layer – Dismantling a Yamnaya kurgan by geochemical, pedological and statistical approaches (Wallachain Plain, Romania)
Geoarchaeological approach combining pedological and archaeological data enhances the understanding of the construction of Yamnaya kurgans. • Palaeosoil buried at the end of the 4 th millennium BC transmits pedological information on the contemporary steppe environment. • Archaeological and geoarchaeological sources reveal and provide details on the ‘cultural re-use’ of Bronze Age Yamnaya kurgans. Kurgans are peculiar, human-made formations of th…

Linear Pottery culture on the lower Danube
Archaeological excavations carried out at Sudiţi (Buzău County, Romania) some decades ago unearthed severalLinear Pottery culture features which were subsequently interpreted and used by various researchers in an attempt to explain the origin of Chalcolithic cultures (such as Boian). The poorly published findings generatedconflicting or arguable theories. Even if it is not the only discovery of its kind, the Neolithic feature from Sudiţiis the mo…
Turanici la Dunărea Inferioară – complexe cercetate recent în nordul Munteniei / Turanians at the Lower Danube – recently investigated contexts in the northern Wallachia
The aim of this paper is to present a series of discoveries attributed to the Turkic nomadic populations (11th– 12th centuries), resulting from archaeological research conducted in 2018 and 2019 in several burial mounds placed in the localities of Târgșoru Nou and Inotești from Prahova County, as well as Lunca from Buzău county. It includes descriptions of the investigated archaeological features, the results of the anthropological and archaeozoo…
Topoare de silex descoperite în așezările culturii Gumelnița de la Urlați (jud. Prahova), Ciolăneștii din Deal, Țigănești (jud. Teleorman), Surdulești (jud. Argeș) și Uzunu (jud. Giurgiu)
Ciolăneștii din Deal, Țigănești (Teleorman County), Surdulești (Argeș County) and Uzunu (Giurgiu County)). Although flint axes are characteristic discoveries in the settlements of the Gumelnița culture, their approach in specialized studies is rather isolated. This type of piece is the proof of the skill of the prehistoric craftsmen and shows the existence of complex woodworking techniques. In this study, we analysed nine unique pieces coming fro…

Between worlds and elites at the beginning of the Early Bronze Age in the Lower Danube Basin
The dynamics of prehistoric burial mounds of Ploieşti metropolitan area (Romania) as reflected by cartographic documents of the 18th–20th centuries
This paper draws attention to the unexploited potential of cartographic material related to Ploieşti city, Romania, from the oldest reports to the modern. The cartographic document may bring valuable, more often than not original, information in order to improve understandings of behavioural patterns and the evolution of prehistoric communities. The study of the distribution and dynamics of burial mounds (tumuli) associated with the Bronze Age, w…
Pit-Graves, Yamnaya and Kurgans along the Lower Danube
Eneolithic zoomorphic vessels from Wallachian Subcarpathians
In Eneolithic settlements some vessels considered special were discovered, including those shaped like animals – zoomorphic vessels, and those imitating the human body – anthropomorphic vessels. Archaeological research in Romania has provided a number of zoomorphic vessels, included in a poor typological diversity. The eneolithic discoveries in northern Wallachia follow a similar pattern. In this study we aim to discuss several aspects that may b…
