The technological dichotomy under debate
The interpretation of prehistoric copper metallurgy (late 4th-3rd millennium BC) in the Iberian Peninsula has historically been dominated by a traditional paradigm. • Archaeometallurgical analysis of copper products recovered from three key sites in the southern Spain has refuted this paradigm. • Analytical protocol that integrates metallographic microscopy, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and Vickers microhardness tests allow us reconstruct …
Diet and Environment in South‐eastern Iberia During the Bronze Age, Based on Isotope Analysis of Human Remains
A large sample of human bones from a series of archaeological sites in the south‐eastern Iberian Peninsula was selected for δ 13 C and δ 15 N stable isotope analysis. Except for some contrast samples, the remains date from the first half of the second millennium cal BC and are ascribed to the Argar Culture, which developed during the Bronze Age in south‐eastern Iberia. Most authors have considered that this region reached a high degree of social …
The gold of the Carambolo Treasure

The ivory workshop of Valencina de la Concepción (Seville, Spain) and the identification of ivory from Asian elephant on the Iberian Peninsula in the first half of the 3rd millennium BC
Direct chronometry (14C AMS) of the earliest copper metallurgy in the Guadalquivir Basin (Spain) during the Third millennium BC
Emergence, collapse and continuity of the first political system in the Guadalquivir Basin from the fourth to the second millennium BC
The smelting quarter of Valencina de la Concepción (Seville, Spain)
The first specialised copper industry in the Iberian peninsula
A new research project has revealed a fully specialised copper industry in south-west Iberia at the beginning of the third millennium BC. The settlement is rife with hierarchy: on the slopes of the hill copper-workers smelt and cast and have their own residential zone, while an incipient aristocracy occupies a small fortification at the summit and commands all the imports and means of transport. The author sees this social system as endemic to th…
Circulation of silicified oolitic limestone blades in South-Iberia (Spain and Portugal) during the third millennium B.C
An archaeological approach to regional environmental pollution in the south-western Iberian Peninsula related to Third millennium BC mining and metallurgy
Space as Coercion
