C-AMS analysis of atmospheric aerosols in coastal regions of Mexico and Cuba
Radiocarbon analysis of atmospheric particulate matter is a powerful tool for elucidating the apportionment of carbon sources. The radiocarbon content enables the differentiation between fossil-derived carbon, primarily from fossil fuel combustion, and modern carbon, associated with for example, biomass burning. Precise identification of anthropogenic and natural aerosol carbon sources is essential for establishing a robust framework to assess th…
Radiocarbon dating of mangrove sediments from the Yucatán Peninsula
The Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, has many shallow coastal lagoons. The interest in the study of mangroves and other ecosystems in this area is due to their capacity to store large amounts of organic carbon (blue carbon). To understand this process, sediments can provide information about the evolution over time of the coastal zone, through changes in their physical and chemical composition. Isotopic techniques have proven to be useful in the study …
Environmental stability in the High Andes of Argentina across the 4.2 ka event
The Holocene clastic and organic sediments from the La Falda section (northern Puna, Argentina), covering the late Northgrippian to early Meghalayan periods, were analyzed. These sediments contain abundant plant macrofossils and microfossils, including leaves and stems attributed to Cyperaceae and Poaceae, as well as pollen. Charcoal is also present in significant amounts. The analysis of these remains provides insights into past environmental an…
The use of 13 C, 14 C and 18 O of dental enamel to estimate the year of birth and geographic origin from Mexican individuals
In recent times, forensic science has increasingly relied on methods that use stable and radioactive isotope analysis to identify human remains. The use of 14 C-AMS dating of dental enamel and dentine of an individual allows the estimation of the year of birth, while that of stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen can provide information on their geographical origin. Isotopic analysis of a tissue complements existing identification techniques, enhan…
Refining Pahñu’s stratigraphic sequence with AMS-radiocarbon dating
Pahñu is an archaeological site belonging to the Xajay culture, which inhabited north-central Mesoamerica in 350–1000 AD. Human burials contained in three pairs of contiguous cists were discovered inside a ceremonial structure at Pahñu during excavations conducted between 2019 and 2022. The walls of the cists separated groups of skeletal remains, so the stratigraphic units containing them did not overlap. Stratigraphically speaking, the six group…
Advancements in radiocarbon dating
In this article, we provide a concise historical summary tracing the evolution of radiocarbon dating techniques in Mexico and Central America. We explore the contributions of early pioneers who first employed radiocarbon dating methods, leading to the establishment of a Mexican accelerator mass spectrometry laboratory. The study highlights its pivotal role in shaping chronological frameworks for archaeological investigations in Mexico. Additional…
Radiocarbon Chronology of the Occupation of the Southern Coast of Nayarit, Mexico
Despite chronicles from the 16th century describing fertile alluvial plains and densely populated wetlands, archaeology in western Mexico has been little studied. The Directorate of Archaeological Salvage (DSA) of National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has initiated a study of two sites in Costa Canuva, at the southern part of Nayarit state: Becerros and Naranjos. Thirty charcoal and shell samples were radiocarbon ( 14 C) dated to …

Linking Radiocarbon and Trophic Webs in Karstic Groundwater Ecosystems in the Yucatan Peninsula, México
Stable isotopes have been used historically to track food webs. Our approach used a combination of δ 13 C and radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating to identify carbon sources in cave shrimp within caves of the Karstic Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Three sister species of stygobitic Typhlatya shrimps were collected from the cenote pool (cenote hereafter), cavern and cave hydro regions. New and previously reported 14 C and δ 13 C values of whole tissues from the…
The First 14 C Laboratory in Mexico
The development of dating with radiocarbon ( 14 C) by W. F. Libby and his colleagues, and its immediate application to archaeological objects from Mexico, aroused the interest of Mexican archaeological community, especially from the Prehistory Direction of the INAH. Joining efforts, the Institute of Physic of UNAM and INAH set up the first 14 C laboratory in 1954. Augusto Moreno, who had worked and learned the technique with Libby in Chicago, was…
Radiocarbon in Mexico
Augusto Moreno is credited with establishing the first radiocarbon ( 14 C) laboratory in Mexico in the 1950s, however, 14 C measurement with the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technique was not achieved in our country until 2003. Douglas Donahue from the University of Arizona, a pioneer in using AMS for 14 C dating, participated in that experiment; then, the idea of establishing a 14 C AMS laboratory evolved into a feasible project. This was…
Chiquihuite Cave and America’s Hidden Limestone Industries
This paper is a reply to Chatters et al. (2021. “Evaluating Claims of Early Human Occupation at Chiquihuite Cave, Mexico.” PaleoAmerica 8, doi:10.1080/20555563.2021.1940441), in which they raise a large number of doubts about the legitimacy of our claims of earlier-than-expected human presence at Chiquihuite Cave, in northern Zacatecas, Mexico, mainly questioning the artificial nature of the lithic assemblage and the integrity of our geological c…
Radiocarbon Dating of Archaeological Material Recovered From the Basin of Mexico
The Mexico City Basin has had exceptional plant and animal diversity since ancient times due to its varied orography and benign climate. This environment attracted diverse human groups, from hunter-gatherers to one of the most influential pre-Hispanic cultures of Mesoamerica: the Mexica, also known as the Aztec. The subsoil of Mexico City hides a rich and varied cultural heritage. The Archaeological Rescue Department works to preserve cultural he…
