The Zen of Anarchy
This essay explores the political origins and implications of Beat Zen anarchism, a cultural phenomenon located in the intersection between American anarchist traditions and Zen Buddhism in the San Francisco Poetry Renaissance. Focusing on the writings of D. T. Suzuki, Alan Watts, Gary Snyder, and Philip Whalen, it shows how Beat Zen emerged not primarily from an Orientalist appropriation of "the East" but rather from an Occidentalist, Japanese-c…

Local conditions and responses to European expansion were important in the ‘interactive emergence of European domination’. However, the comparative lack of sources has tended to obscure what these were. In the early eighteenth century, Morocco was responding to the growth of English power in the Mediterranean; new sources presented here show how ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥamāmī, one of Sultan Mawlāy Ismāʿīl's most powerful ministers, tried to co-oper…
The solitude of Edward Said
Though concerned with representation and misrepresentation, Orientatism encounters problems in its own representation of several of the figures it discusses. This paper considers Said's treatment of three of them: H.A.R. Gibb, Louis Massignon and E.W. Lane.
