This article is designed to open a conversation about the place of spirituality in social work, highlight possible ethical issues, and question whether spirituality, as defined by social work and popular culture, is an immutable part of human development. Using Self-Rating Scales for Assessing the Severely Mentally Ill Client
Seventy-five SPMI clients were administered Hudson's Generalized Contentment Scaleand Index of Self-Esteem. The item responses and total scores were analyzed statistically for reliability and validity. It was found that when a guided self-rating system rather than independent self-rating was employed, the two Hudson scales had high reliability (.88 and .91) and concurrent instrument validity (.88 and .91). Biological science is close to proving empirically that schizophrenia is a neuropathological disease process. Although the etiology is unknown, it does not appear to correlate with family systems, early attachments, communication styles, or environmental stress.
