Fortifications of the Tyumen Ostrog and Posad in the 16th–18th Centuries
The article focuses on reconstructing the stages in the development of Tyumen’s fortification system from in the late 16th–18th century, based on archaeological excavation materials from 2023–2024, written sources, and dendrochronological dating of the wood from cultural layers. The research has established the location and recorded the metric characteristics of the earliest defensive line — a palisade and ditch — that protected the Tyumen ostrog…
Tubeless clay kiln of the 17th century used for firing pottery on the Tarkhansky Ostrog
The article presents a tubeless clay kiln of the 17th century, used for firing ceramic products, in particular kitchenware. This is the first structure of this type in Western Siberia fully studied by excavations. Based on data from excavations and geophysical research, a graphic reconstruction of the furnace has been carried out. It represents a clay vault positioned within a filled pit on a pillow with a wooden frame, with a combined furnace an…
Fortifications of the Ust-Tersyuk fortified settlement of the Early Middle Ages
The article analyses early medieval structures of the outer fortification line in Ust-Tersyuk hillfort by the Iset River. The research is based on excavation finds made in 2010 and 2023. The fortified cape settlement is surrounded by a protection structure all around. Besides, it has two transverse structures that separate the cape and gullies and form two sites. One of the sites is pentagonal, the other one is octagonal. It is established that t…
Tarkhan Prison and Surrounding Tatars in Late 17th — Early 18th Centuries
The experience of reconstructing the system of settlement and land use of the Tatar and Russian population in one of the regions of the Lower Tobol region is presented on the basis of an analysis of maps and archival sources of the 17th century. As a result of comparing the map of S. U. Remezov with modern cartographic material, the displacement of the channels of the Tobol, Tura and Tapa and a large water supply of the surrounding water bodies c…
Tarkhansky Ostrog of the 17th−18th centuries
The paper is aimed to introduce into scientific discourse materials of the research of 2020-2021 which con-firm the earlier conjecture on the location of the Tarkhansky Ostrog as on the butte at the confluence of the Tobol and Tap Rivers. The results of the geophysical surveys and excavations on the area of 168 sqm provided conclu-sive evidence towards the correctness of the preliminary argument on the location of the Ostrog and attribution of th…
Late Medieval complexes of the forest-steppe and sub-taiga Trans-Urals (based on materials from the settlement of Stary Pogost)
The paper concerns the results of the archaeological investigation of the Late Medieval sites in the forest-steppe and sub-taiga regions of Trans-Urals (Western Siberia). With the example of the fortress of Stary Pogost, and using the materials on all studied Late Medieval sites of the region (the hillforts of Yelyak-Alyp, Maloye Bakalskoye, Chingi-Tura, Isker, Kuchum-gora, Ivanovskoye, Dolgovskoye 1, the sanctuary of Tsingalinskoye), the main as…
The Sarov complex on the Singul Lake
The paper presents the results of the study of the Sarov complex in the Roza Vetrov VII settlement, located in the forest-steppe Tobol River Region (Western Siberia). The Sarov stage of the Kulayka Culture terminates the Early Iron Age and dates to the 1st c. BC - 3rd c. AD. The dwelling represented by a hut-like superstructure used by fishermen during the spawning period of the warm season is described. Also characterised are the tools in-cludin…
Early Iron Age Complex of the Lastochkino Gnezdo 1 Settlement in the Lower Ishim River Basin
In this article, we present the results of a study carried out at the Early Iron Age site in the multi-layered settlement Lastochkino Gnezdo 1 in the Lower Ishim river basin. Following a series of fieldwork studies, it is revealed that this Early Iron Age settlement featured defence constructions in the form of a ditch and a rampart. The discovered hearth and the remains of vessels around it allowed us to suggest the presence of a ground structur…
The Medieval Settlement of Isetskoie 2 in the Iset River Basin
The article deals with materials of excavations at Isetskoie 2, an unfortified settlement of the Middle Ages, located in the Lower Iset River basin. The published materials are important due to poor previous study of unfortified settlements of the Bakal culture. The place is single-layered which makes it a valuable source for reconstruc-ting house-building traditions and material culture of the Medieval population of the forest-steppe zone of the…
New Data on the Burial Ritual of the Yudino Population (Based on the Materials of Zavodoukovsky-3 Burial Mound)
The article presents the results of a study of the Early Medieval burial mound of Zavodoukovsky-3. Almost complete absence of burial complexes of the Early Middle Ages in the forest-steppe and subtaiga Trans-Urals determines the high importance of the materials obtained for reconstruction of the burial rite of the Yudino culture population and, in the future, for reconstruction of genesis, development of chronology and periodization issues of the…
