While previous research has examined self-disclosure of sexual abuse in advice columns of magazines, newspapers, and social media spaces such as Reddit, Twitter and Facebook, this qualitative study navigates new terrain by examining such narratives published on an Indian news website by drawing upon the concept of ‘counterpublics’ and the theory of networked affect. This study inquires whether cultural proximity may explain how media handle terrorism in a global village era where cultural proximity may have given way to cosmopolitanism in news-making. This study explores how young Indian Muslim women negotiate multiple influences while posting their own photographs on social networking sites. In depth interviews showed that these women made a strategic effort not to disrupt the social reputation of their families with the nature of their online visual presentations. This paper investigates how a mainstream American newspaper (The New York Times) and an Indian counterpart (The Times of India) construct political violence within the American occupation of Iraq, and how they reconcile notions of democracy and occupation.
