  • Antecedents and Effects of Parasocial Relationships

Open Access•Riva Tukachinsky, Nathan Walter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2020

The current meta-analysis synthesizes four decades of research (k = 120) on the antecedents and effects of parasocial relationships (PSRs). In line with contemporary theorization of PSRs as an extension of, rather than as a substitution for social relationships, the meta-analysis does not find a significant relationship between social deficiencies and PSRs. PSRs are also strongly correlated with factors that facilitate interpersonal bonds (e.g., …

  • Meta-Analysis of Anger and Persuasion

Open Access•Nathan Walter, Riva Tukachinsky et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2019

Despite the increasing use of anger in persuasive messaging, such as political ads and health campaigns, very little is known about when and how anger affects persuasion. Building on theoretical propositions derived from four theoretical models that have addressed the link between anger and persuasion, the current meta-analysis (k = 55, N = 6,805) finds a weak impact of anger on behavior (r = .15, p = .04) and nonsignificant effects on attitudes …

    Riva Tukachinsky, Keren Eyal•ARTICLE•Mass Communication & Society•2018•Citada por: 6•Referências: 10

This study focuses on the expanding trend of marathon (“binge”) television viewing. It examines the personality antecedents of such media consumption (attachment style, depression, and self-regulation deficiency) as well as the psychological experiences of marathon viewers relative to the narrative (transportation, enjoyment) and its characters (parasocial relationship, identification). In a two-study design, theoretical models of media use and i…

  • Theorizing Development of Parasocial Engagement

    Open Access•Riva Tukachinsky, Gayle S Stever et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Theory•2018•Citada por: 19•Referências: 10

The article proposes a theoretical model of the development of parasocial relationships (PSRs) building on Knapp’s model of relationship development. Through synthesis of research across disciplines, the model conceptualizes the relational goals and parasocial interactions (PSIs) specific to the PSR. The model identifies variables that predict engagement at that level, describes the stage’s outcomes/effects, and considers the utility of existing …

  • The Effect of Prime Time Television Ethnic/Racial Stereotypes on Latino and Black Americans

Riva Tukachinsky, Dana Mastro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Broadcasting &…•2017•Citada por: 25•Referências: 8

Much is known about the negative consequences of exposure to ethnic/racial stereotypes in the media, on White audiences. However, there is substantially less research addressing the effects of such media content on members of racial/ethnic minority groups. The present study examines this question using repeated cross-sectional national level data alongside a content analysis of top prime time shows between 1987 and 2008. Multi-level modeling anal…

  • Where We Have Been and Where We Can Go From Here

    Open Access•Riva Tukachinsky•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2015•Citada por: 7•Referências: 30

This special issue illuminates the ways in which media portrayals and practices, together, create barriers to inclusion for diverse groups and normalize existing patterns of relegation on and off the screen. Media representations of race and ethnicity have critical consequences for intergroup relationships and for marginalized group members’ self‐concept. A synthesis of the research included in this volume demonstrates the significance of these q…

    Riva Tukachinsky•ARTICLE•Communication Methods and Measures•2014•Citada por: 13•Referências: 15

The study evaluates the effectiveness of experimental manipulations of transportation, immersion, spatial presence, character identification, and perceived similarity. The meta-analysis reveals that only about half the studies reported significant group differences in the predicted direction. On average, manipulations had a small to medium effect. Certain manipulations were more likely to influence some types of involvement than others. Transport…

A meta-analysis was employed to evaluate the state of research on the persuasion effects of involvement with entertainment media. The study investigates the effect of homophily, empathic identification, parasocial relationships, and transportation with entertainment media on attitudinal, behavioral and knowledge-related outcomes. The study identifies the specific conditions under which the effects vary. Results from the meta-analysis suggest that…

  • The Influence of Media Exposure on the Formation, Activation, and Application of Racial/Ethnic Stereotypes

    Open Access•Dana Mastro, Riva Tukachinsky•CHAPTER•2012

Although exposure to mass media content represents only one of a number of factors associated with the construction and application of racial/ethnic stereotypes, its influence should not be trivialized. Both theory and empirical research on media and stereotyping indicate that stereotypes arise from and are maintained via interaction with the messages offered in mass media fare – including exposure to both thematic messages as well as more uncomm…

  • The Influence of Exemplar Versus Prototype-Based Media Primes on Racial/Ethnic Evaluations

    Open Access•Dana Mastro, Riva Tukachinsky•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2011

This study examined the individual and combined effects of exposure to positive Latino exemplars and prototypes in the media on White audience members' attitudes about and judgments regarding Latinos in society. Although it was expected that exposure to these favorable models would promote positive evaluations of Latinos among White consumers, the extent to which one mode of presentation could be privileged in the production of more beneficial ou…

Assumptions from exemplification theory and theories of information processing guided the investigation. A series of two studies found that pictures and personal stories have comparable effects on perceptions of and at…
