Mace or Sceptre? An exceptional Early Bronze Age male burial from the area of Lake Fertő
A newly discovered Bronze Age cemetery, remarkable for the quantity and diversity of copper and bronze objects, was unearthed on the outskirts of Nagycenk during the excavations in the path of the then-future M85 motorway in 2017–2018. The inhumation graves and their finds can be attributed to the Gáta–Wieselburg culture, which extended into the areas of today’s Western Hungary, Eastern Austria, and Southwest Slovakia between 2200/2100 and 1600/1…
Buzogány vagy jogar? Kiemelkedő férfi temetkezés a kora bronzkorból a Fertő-tó vidékén
A réz-, illetve bronztárgyak mennyiségében és típusában egyedülálló, újabb bronzkori temető került elő Nagycenk határában 2017–2018-ban az M85 autóút nyomvonalának feltárásán. A csontvázas temetkezések és mellékleteik a Nyugat-Magyarországon, Kelet-Ausztriában és Délnyugat-Szlovákiában elterjedt Gáta–Wieselburg-kultúrához köthetők (Kr. e. 2200/2100–1600/1500). A jelen tanulmányban bemutatott kiemelkedő gazdagságú S153-as férfi sírban különleges, …
The population history of Central Europe in the Early Bronze Age (2200/2100–1600/1500 BC) - a craniometric approach
During the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, migrations and the advent of working bronze alloy materials triggered profound cultural, social, and economic shifts across Central Europe. As a result of this processes, many communities with distinct archaeological and cultural characteristics emerged during the Central European Early Bronze Age (between circa 2200/2100 and 1600/1500 BC) in Central Europe, and with the Middle Bronze Age of the Car…
Northwest Transdanubia from the end of the Early Bronze Age until the Koszider Period
Review article of the PhD dissertation submitted in 2023 to the Archaeology Doctoral Programme, Doctoral School of History, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, and written under the supervision of Gábor V. Szabó. The dissertation investigated the processes taking place at the end of the Early and in the Middle Bronze Age in northwest Hungary, predominantly in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, based on sites at Nagycenk, Hegyeshalom, Enese, Győr-Ménfőcsan…
A fifth‐ to sixth‐century CE lynx ( Lynx lynx L., 1758) skeleton from Hungary 2
Lynx remains are rare in archaeological assemblages. The skeleton of an adult male accompanied by four dogs was found in a large Migration Period pit at Zamárdi–Kútvölgyi‐dűlő II, Hungary. Extant lynx skeletons were used in estimating the shoulder height of this individual. Its stature is comparable to those of the large dogs it was buried with. None of the five skeletons showed skinning marks. Although the physical reconstruction of the lynx was…
A Gáta–Wieselburg-kultúra temetője és kiemelkedő síregyüttesei Nagycenk-Farkasverem lelőhelyről

Provenance, technology and possible function of Gáta–Wieselburg vessels from the Trieste Karst (northeastern Italy)
A few scattered vessels, typologically attributed to the Gáta–Wieselburg culture, are known from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy. This culture spread during the Early Bronze Age (Reinecke Br A1b and A2, 2100–1700/1600 bc ) in present‐day eastern Austria, western Hungary and southwestern Slovakia. Rare ceramic artefacts, typically biconical double‐handled jugs with well‐burnished surfaces, have been discovered in caves of th…
Becoming Adults
The last few decades witnessed increasing attention to the study of the state and role of children in different historical and prehistoric periods. The graves of those who unfortunately died in their childhood are one of the most informative and important sources for this topic in prehistoric research, which, thanks to modern scientific methods, can provide information not only about the diseases or sex of the young deceased, but also about their…
Átmenet a felnőttkorba
Baltic Amber in Hungarian Bronze Age. New data and current stage of research
Amber was one of the key raw materials distributed in Bronze Age Europe. One of its varieties – succinite – wasexchanged over a vast area stretching from its sources on the southern shores of the Baltic Sea to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The chemical identification of Baltic amber significantly expands our knowledge of the dynamics and nature of the relationships connecting different regions of Europe in the first half of the second mill…
The First ‘Urnfields’ in the Plains of the Danube and the Po
Archaeological research is currently redefining how large-scale changes occurred in prehistoric times. In addition to the long-standing theoretical dichotomy between ‘cultural transmission’ and ‘demic diffusion’, many alternative models borrowed from sociology can be used to explain the spread of innovations. The emergence of urnfields in Middle and Late Bronze Age Europe is certainly one of these large-scale phenomena; its wide distribution has …
Methods and Opportunities in the Research of Bronze Age Communities
Although there is no textual evidence known from the Bronze Age, written sources describing migrations of later (i.e. Early Medieval) periods effecting the Carpathian Basin were interpreted as instances of cultural and population change which could be comparable with processes that took place during the Bronze Age in the Carpathian Basin. In the past two decades, Eurasian archaeological research received a new impetus to investigate the traces of…
Módszerek és lehetőségek a bronzkori közösségek kutatásában
Bár írásos emlékeket nem ismerünk a bronzkor időszakából, a Kárpát-medencét érintő későbbi (pl. kora középkori) népvándorlásokra vonatkozó források ismeretében gyakran a bronzkor változásait is új népek betelepüléséhez, kisebb-nagyobb migrációkhoz kötötte a régészeti kutatás. Az utóbbi két évtizedben újra előtérbe került a történelem előtti időkben feltételezhető eurázsiai vándorlások nyomainak azonosítása, a kutatásba immár más tudományágak, töb…
A nemi identitás kifejezésének vizsgálata a Nyugat-Dunántúl kora és középső bronzkori csontvázas temetkezései körében - Study on the Representation of Gender Identity within the Early and Middle Bronz…
A sírok vizsgálatának előnye, hogy a nemi identitásokat és a hozzájuk kapcsolódó szerepeket több, régé-szetileg megfogható szinten van módunk vizsgálni: a biológiai nem, a sírba helyezés módjai (tájolás, fekte-tés), valamint a sírba helyezett tárgyak száma, típusa, anyaga, továbbá bizonyos esetekben a sírok utóla-gos felnyitásának jellegzetességei révén. Ezeket a jelenségeket elemeztük 10 lelőhely, a magyarországi koraés középső bronzkor átmeneté…

Adoption and Evaluation of a sample Pretreatment Protocol for Radiocarbon Dating of Cremated Bones at Hekal
A comparative study was undertaken to adopt and evaluate a radiocarbon ( 14 C) preparation procedure for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurements of cremated bones at our laboratory, including different types of archaeological samples (cremated bone, bone, charcoal, charred grain). All 14 C analyses were performed using the EnvironMICADAS AMS instrument at the Hertelendi Laboratory of Environmental Studies (HEKAL) and the ancillary analys…
A cemetery of the Gáta–Wieselburg culture at Nagycenk (Western Hungary)
The 29 individuals found in 27 graves at Nagycenk were buried there in the time period between 2000–1700 BC, according to radiocarbon dates – i.e. at the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age in Hungary. The cemetery is of unique importance, both because of the richness of burial assemblages (altogether 30 bronze objects, 5 gold jewelries) and the scarcity of known Gáta–Wieselburg cemeteries. 15 percent of the ca. 180 burials in total, which relate …
A ménfőcsanaki középső bronzkori település nyugati típusú leletegyüttesei
