  • A possible case of 'poll-evil' in an early Scythian horse skull from Arzhan 1, Tuva Republic, Central Asia

    Open Access•Robin Bendrey, Joseph P Cassidy et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011•Citada por: 6•Referências: 10

Occipital bone lesions on an Iron Age horse cranium from the burial mound of Arzhan 1, Tuva, Central Asia, are described and interpreted. Cavitations around the nuchal ligament attachment site on the skull are interpreted as foci of inflammation and necrosis following local infection. It is suggested that the pathology represents a case of 'poll-evil', most likely due to a bacterial infection. The significance of such an interpretation is discuss…

  • Chronology of Holocene Climate and Vegetation Changes and their Connection to Cultural Dynamics in Southern Siberia

    Open Access•V G Dirksen, B van Geel et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Citada por: 2•Referências: 22

Two sediment sequences from Big Kyzykul Lake and the Shushenskoe paleolake in the Minusinsk depression, Southern Siberia, were studied by pollen, microfossil, and geochemical analyses, as well as radiocarbon dating. The records indicate the persistence of an arid period between ∼11.7–7.6 cal kyr BP, increased effective moisture since ∼7.6 cal kyr BP, 2 humid impulses at ∼5.1 and 2.8 cal kyr BP separated by a dry interval, and the return to genera…

  • Chronology and Possible Links Between Climatic and Cultural Change During the First Millennium Bc in Southern Siberia and Central Asia

    Open Access•G I Zaitseva, B van Geel et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Citada por: 4•Referências: 14

We reconstructed climate change during the second half of the Holocene for the Minusinsk (southern Siberia) and the Uyuk (Central Asia) valleys in the Eurasian steppe zone. Sediment cores from 2 lakes and a soil profile from the Arzhan-2 burial mount were investigated. We combined pollen and geochemical analyses and radiocarbon dating with the archaeological record. A sharp increase of human population density occurred at the transition from the …

  • A Chronology of the Scythian Antiquities of Eurasia Based on New Archaeological and 14 C Data

    Open Access•Andrey Yu Alekseev, N A Bokovenko et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Citada por: 21•Referências: 1

The paper is compares the chronology of the monuments of the Scythian epoch located in the east and west of the Eurasian steppe zone on the basis of both archaeological and radiocarbon data. The lists of 14 C dates for the monuments located in different parts of Eurasia are presented according to the periods of their existence. Generally, the 14 C dates are confirmed the archaeological point of view and allow us to compare the chronological posit…

  • Chronology of the Burial Finds from Scythian Monuments in Southern Siberia and Central Asia

    Open Access•A A Sementsov, G I Zaitseva et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Citada por: 2•Referências: 2

We present here new radiocarbon dates for the different barrows (burial mounds) of the nomadic tribes of the Scythian period in the Khakassia and Tuva regions (Central Asia). The time scale of these barrows is compared with the elite barrows of the Sayan-Altai. In agreement with archaeological evidence, some barrows in Khakassia are chronologically close in time to the Arzhan barrow. The first 14 C dates produced for the barrows from the Tuva reg…
