  • Scaffolding the Mastery of Healthy Behaviors with Fittle+ Systems

Peter Pirolli, G Michael Youngblood et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•2018

We present a series of mHealth applications and studies pursued as part of the Fittle+ project. This program of research has the dual aims of (1) bringing scalable evidence-based behavior-change interventions to mHealth and evaluating them and (2) developing theoretically based predictive models to better understand the dynamics of the impact of these interventions on achieving behavior-change goals. Our approach in the Fittle+ systems rests on t…

  • Introduction to this Special Issue on Sensemaking

Peter Pirolli, Daniel Russell et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•2011

As sensemaking systems have emerged, so too has an interest in the psychological aspects of the psychological and social processes involved in interacting with such systems (Klein, Moon, & Hoffman, 2006a, 2006b;Pirolli & Card, 2005).At the moment, there seems to be three substantially different perspectives on the sensemaking idea

  • Want to be Retweeted? Large Scale Analytics on Factors Impacting Retweet in Twitter Network

Bongwon Suh, Lichan Hong et al.•CONFERENCE•2010 IEEE Second International…•2010

Retweeting is the key mechanism for information diffusion in Twitter. It emerged as a simple yet powerful way of disseminating information in the Twitter social network. Even though a lot of information is shared in Twitter, little is known yet about how and why certain information spreads more widely than others. In this paper, we examine a number of features that might affect retweetability of tweets. We gathered content and contextual features…

  • Information Foraging Theory

    Peter Pirolli, Peter L T Pirolli•BOOK•Information Foraging Theory•2007

Modern mankind forages in a world awash in information, of our own creation, which can be transformed into knowledge that shapes and powers our engagement with nature. We produce a staggering volume of content that can be transmitted at the speed of light. This wealth of information provides resources for adapting to the problems posed by our increasingly complex world. However, this information environment poses its own complex problems that req…

  • Snif-Act

    Open Access•Wai‐Tat Fu, Wai-Tat Fu et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•2007

We describe the development of a computational cognitive model that explains navigation behavior on the World Wide Web. The model, called SNIF-ACT (Scent-based Navigation and Information Foraging in the ACT cognitive architecture), is motivated by Information Foraging Theory (IFT), which quantifies the perceived relevance of a Web link to a user’s goal by a spreading activation mechanism. The model assumes that users evaluate links on a Web page …

  • A Cognitive Model and Computer Tutor for Programming Recursion

    Peter Pirolli•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•1986

This article discusses cognitive models of learning to program recursion and their relation to lessons on recursion in an intelligent computer tutor for LISP programming (the LISP Tutor). The cognitive models are implemented as production systems in which programming skill is characterized as the decomposition of programming goals into subgoals and elementary actions via the application of programming plans. Two sets of learning mechanisms are us…
