  • Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels

    Adolf Grunbaum•CHAPTER•Nineteenth-Century Philosophy of…•2014

Karl Marx (1818–1883) was born in Trèves in the Rhineland. He studied law in Bonn, philosophy and history in Berlin, and received a doctorate from the University of Jena for a thesis on Epicurus (341–270 BC). (Epicurus' philosophy was a reaction against the ‘other-worldliness’ of Plato's theory of Forms. Whereas for Plato knowledge was of intelligible Forms, and the criterion of the truth of a hypothesis about the definition of a Form was that it…

    Adolf Grunbaum•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Psychology•2007

  • Is Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic edifice relevant to the 21st century

    Adolf Grunbaum•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Psychology•2006

To warrant the relevance, if any, of Freud’s psychoanalytic edifice to the 21st century, its supporters must endeavor, if at all possible, to find genuine evidence for its major pillars or to modify them significantly in response to emerging new evidence. Such a quest must begin with a clear understanding of the range and depth of the failure of Freud’s cardinal clinical arguments. I endeavor below to provide such comprehension by laying bare the…

  • The Poverty of Theistic Cosmology

    Adolf Grunbaum•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•2004•Citada por: 2•Referências: 7

Philosophers have postulated the existence of God to explain (I) why any contingent objects exist at all rather than nothing contingent, and (II) why the fundamental laws of nature and basic facts of the world are exactly what they are. Therefore, we ask: (a) Does (I) pose a well-conceived question which calls for an answer? and (b) Can God's presumed will (or intention) provide a cogent explanation of the basic laws and facts of the world, as cl…

  • A Century of Psychoanalysis

    Adolf Grunbaum•ARTICLE•International Forum of…•2001

At the end of the first century of psychoanalytic theory and therapy, this paper takes critical stock of its past performance as a theory of human nature, and as a therapy. An account of the distinction between the dynamic and cognitive species of unconscious is followed by a critique of Freudian and post-Freudian psychoanalysis, as well as by an unfavorable verdict on the reconstruction of psychoanalysis by the ?hermeneutic? philosophers. Conclu…

  • Does Freudian Theory Resolve “The Paradoxes of Irrationality”

    Open Access•Adolf Grunbaum•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2001•Referências: 1

This paper consists of two related parts: I. A detailed critique of Donald Davidson's thesis—in his “The Paradoxes of Irrationality”—that “...any satisfactory [explanatory] view [of irrationality] must embrace some of Freud's most important theses” (p. 290). I argue that this conclusion is doubly flawed: (i) Davidson's case for it is logically ill‐founded , and (ii) its Freudian plaidoyer is also factually false. II. Relatedly, in the second part…

  • Empirical Evaluations of Theoretical Explanations of Psychotherapeutic Efficacy

    Open Access•Adolf Grunbaum•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1996

Using Grünbaum 1984 and 1993 as a springboard, Greenwood (this issue) claims to have offered several methodologically salubrious and exegetically illuminating theses on empirical evaluations of theoretical explanations of psychotherapeutic efficacy. According to his exegesis of Grünbaum's construction (1984, Ch. 2, Section C; 1993, 184–204) of Freud's “Tally Argument,” that argument bespeaks a rife neglect of the epistemologically-significant dis…

  • Narlikar's “Creation” of the Big Bang Universe was a Mere Origination

    Open Access•Adolf Grunbaum•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1993•Referências: 5

In Grünbaum (1989, 374, 390), I objected to Narlikar's (1977, 136–137) designation “event of ‘creation’” for a supposed first cosmic instant t = 0, which he imports into the big bang cosmology of the general theory of relativity (GTR). Narlikar (1992, 361–362) does reject a theological construal of the “creation”. But, endeavoring to justify his secular creationism, he now points out that, in the GTR, the usual derivation of matter-energy conserv…

    Open Access•Adolf Grunbaum•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1990•Citada por: 4•Referências: 3

In much of psychoanalytic theory and therapy, Freud repeatedly inferred a causal connection between thematically kindred events by relying on the kinship between their thematic contents. This paper strongly endorses his search for causal explanations. But it argues in detail that (1) his causal inferences from thematic connections rest on an important fallacy, which undermines major etiologic conclusions in psychoanalysis; (2) a related, weighty …

According to some cosmologists, the big bang cosmogony and even the (now largely defunct) steady-state theory pose a scientifically insoluble problem of matter-energy creation. But I argue that the genuine problem of the origin of matter-energy or of the universe has been fallaciously transmuted into the pseudo-problem of creation by an external cause. A fortiori, it emerges that the initial “true” and “false” vacuum states of quantum cosmology d…

  • Retrocausation and the Formal Assimilation of Classical Electrodynamics to Newtonian Mechanics

    Open Access•Adolf Grunbaum, Allen I Janis•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1979

Dirac's classical electrodynamics countenances “preaccelerations” of charged particles at a time t as mathematical functions of external forces applied after the time t. These preaccelerations have been interpreted as evidence for physical retrocausation upon assuming that, in electrodynamics no less than in Newton's second law, external forces sustain an asymmetric causal relation to accelerations. And this retrocausal interpretation has just be…

Is it a “conceptual truth” or only a logically contingent fact that, in any given kind of case, an event x which asymmetrically causes (“produces”) an event y likewise temporally precedes y or at least does not temporally succeed y ? A bona fide physical example in which the cause retroproduces the effect would show that backward causation is no less conceptually possible than forward causation. • The Duhemian Argument

    Open Access•Adolf Grunbaum•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1960•Citada por: 10•Referências: 3

This paper offers a refutation of P. Duhem's thesis that the falsifiability of an isolated empirical hypothesis H as an explanans is unavoidably inconclusive. Its central contentions are the following: 1. No general features of the logic of falsifiability can assure, for every isolated empirical hypothesis H and independently of the domain to which it pertains, that H can always be preserved as an explanans of any empirical findings O whatever by…

  • Temporally-Asymmetric Principles, Parity between Explanation and Prediction, and Mechanism Versus Teleology

    Open Access•Adolf Grunbaum•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1962•Citada por: 3

Three major ways in which temporal asymmetries enter into scientific induction are discussed as follows: 1. An account is given of the physical basis for the temporal asymmetry of recordability, which obtains in the following sense: except for humanly recorded predictions and one other class of advance indicators to be discussed, interacting systems can contain reliable indicators of only their past and not of their future interactions. • The Clock Paradox in the Special Theory of Relativity

    Open Access•Adolf Grunbaum•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1954•Citada por: 3

    1. Introduction. The germ of the clock paradox was contained in Einstein's fundamental paper on the special theory of relativity, where he declares that the retardation of a moving clock “still holds good if the clock moves from A to B in any polygonal line, and also when the points A and B coincide.” This remark soon gave rise to a criticism which was to play a prominent role in the discussions of the consistency of the theory of relativity. It …

Professor Margenau's paper presents an analysis of physical theory which has the great merit of exhibiting classical physics and modern quantum mechanics as different aspects of the same epistemological and methodological framework. By maintaining that “there is not a tree and my construct of it, nor a wave length and my construct of it” he is denying that the constructs of ordinary common sense and, a fortiori , the theoretical constructs of the…

They write: “Einstein decided that simultaneity is meaningless in all cases of relative motion. ...
