Marble for the Emperor—The Cover Slab of the Sarcophagus of Otto the Great in Magdeburg Cathedral, Germany
As part of a fundamental and comprehensive monitoring and conservation of the tomb of Emperor Otto the Great in the cathedral of Magdeburg, the question of the provenance of the marble cover slab of the sarcophagus was investigated. Within the restoration activities, two samples of the slab were taken for scientific provenance analyses, one sample of the white marble and another of the irregular grey bands. The following investigations were used …
White Marble Votive Reliefs from Pautalia in Roman Thrace and Their Role in Eastern Provincial Connectivity
This study presents the results of an archaeometric investigation of white marble votive reliefs from the Roman city of Pautalia (modern Kyustendil, Bulgaria), with the aim of clarifying patterns of material selection, production, and connectivity within the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. Although these votive monuments, primarily dated to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, have long been examined from stylistic, iconographic, and epigraphic p…
From quarry to code
First comprehensive provenance study of white marble from inland Roman Thrace (Chatalka region). • Integrated multi-proxy analyses ensure robust and reliable marble provenancing. • Berkovitsa, Asenovgrad, Armira and Kamilski Dol identified as key regional marble sources. • Local Thracian marble dominated architectural, sculptural and votive production. • Selective use of imported Prokonnesian marble reflects elite and symbolic choices. This paper…
Marble Extraction and its Industry
Through an analysis of the tool marks, imprints on the parent rock, unfinished objects, and the waste left behind, quarries provide a wealth of information about the organisation, manufacturing process, transportation, and the broader stone trade and production they supported. Adopting an intra-cross-craft approach, scholars studying stone craft can gain a deeper understanding of the various stages of production, starting at the primary level of …
How can white marble provenance studies change our perception of the stone trade in the Roman Empire
Provenance studies of ancient white marble provide essential insights into the economic, cultural, and technological dimensions of the Roman Empire. By identifying the geological and geographical origins of marble, such studies illuminate production patterns, trade dynamics, and elite consumption practices across regions. Archaeometric approaches—especially petrography, geochemistry, and isotopic analysis—have become indispensable in this context…

An interdisciplinary workflow for the comprehensive study of ancient quarried landscapes
Quarries are information-rich anthropic landscapes, but their unique characteristics often limit the effectiveness of traditional archaeological documentation strategies. Here, the authors present a novel interdisciplinary method for the documentation and analysis of these landscapes, focusing on two ancient marble quarries on the Mediterranean island of Naxos. The workflow, combining lidar, photogrammetry, sculptural and architectural study, geo…
New evidence of the supra-regional marble trade network in Thrace, through the archaeometric study of sculptures in Roman Philippopolis
Scientific investigation on the provenance of marble of free-standing sculptures from the archaeological museum of Kavala/northern Greece
A contribution to the urbanization and marble supply of Roman Thrace
The study of marble trade in antiquity has received a lot of scholarly attention in the last few decades; however, numerous deposits of high-quality white marble in the Thracian interior have only recently become pivotal in Bulgaria. Following the establishment of Thrace as a Roman province, investments into transport infrastructure, urban and rural construction works and monumentalizing architecture in marble have led to an increased demand for …

The challenge of a successful discrimination of ancient marbles (part IV)
Geochemical and petrographic investigation of the provenance of white marble decorative elements from the Roman Villa Armira in south-eastern Bulgaria
The paper presents evidence of Roman marble production in the Balkan region, specifically from the south-eastern Rhodope Mountain area (modern Bulgaria) and Armira. Although the Roman marble trade and production in antiquity are well known in Prokonnesos, Thasos, and several other production sites, marble deposits from inland Thrace have received far less attention. In 2018-2019, a systematic survey of south-eastern Bulgaria (Roman Thrace) was ca…
The marbles of the basilica of Ascalon
This paper presents the research conducted on the origin of the white marble architecture of the basilica of Ascalon (Israel). The basilica is located in the civic centre of the Roman city of Ascalon and it is one of the relatively few known monumental buildings of Roman Palestine. The various construction phases of the basilica are dated from the first century BC to the third century AD. As Israel has no sources of marble, this paper explores th…
