Developmental Dyslexia
Models of the stages by which the acquisition of reading skills normally proceeds have been proposed by Frith (1985) and Seymour (1987). Based on these developmental models, a battery of psycholinguistic tests appropriate for English-speaking South African children was devised to identify the processing strategies which a child has and has not acquired. The procedure yields both qualitative and quantitative information and allows comparison of dy…
A Psycholinguistic Perspective on Bilinguals' Discrepant Questionnaire Responses
The Finding That Bilinguals Sometimes Respond Differently To The Same Item In Different Language Versions Of Questionnaires Is Usually Interpreted In Terms Of Social Psychological Processes Such As Accommodation, Ethnic Affirmation, Or Social Desirability. However, The Discrepant Responses Of Bilinguals May Be A Function Of The Way In Which The Languages Have Been Acquired. In Terms Of The Dual-Coding Model, Compound Bilinguals Should Have The Sa…
Cognitive Aspects of Bilingualism. Part 2. Internal Representation
In this article we review and evaluate different explanations of the structure of the bilingual lexicon and of the internal representation of the two languages. We present evidence for and against shared or separate internal representation, and consider different conceptual models of bilingualism. We propose a theoretical model to explain the manner in which bilinguals process information. The theory extends the information-processing model devel…
Cognitive Aspects of Bilingualism. Part 1. External Features
In this review we evaluate definitions of bilingualism, its nature and scope, and types of bilinguals. We indicate the importance of assessing the degree of bilingualism accurately, and delineate some of the difficulties associated with evaluating it. We discuss bilingualism and biscriptalism, and reading different orthographies. Finally we place these issues within the context of English — Afrikaans bilingualism in South Africa
A Comparison between the Neale Analysis of Reading Ability and the South African Scholastic Achievement Test
Two tests of reading ability, the Neale Analysis of Reading Ability and the South African Scholastic Achievement Test, were psychometrically compared. Both tests were administered to a group of reading disabled children and a statistical analysis of the results was undertaken. The correlation between the tests was found to be high, and a high degree of internal consistency was demonstrated for the Scholastic Achievement Test. These findings indic…
The Role of Lexical Phonology in Reading
In this study we examined phonological encoding during reading by investigating whether different types of verbal and nonverbal material and an articulatory suppression task interfered with reading comprehension and with a nonword rhyme judgment task. Neither the presence of an auditory interference task nor the articulatory suppression task had any effect on accuracy of comprehension or on judging if nonwords rhymed. It took longer to read prose…
Comprehending Text and Comprehension Tests
Four different categories of reading tests are discussed with special attention to their relevance for reading comprehension. Diagnostic and phonic tests serve special functions, but pronunciation, or word tests are often assumed to be measures of comprehension. A detailed critique of one of these, the Schonell Graded Reading Test (R1) is presented and some explanations are suggested for the type of error usually made on this type of test. Severa…
Preliminary Standardization of the Durrell Listening-Reading Series
A preliminary item analysis of the ‘Durrell Listening-Reading Series’ was carried out on 380 English-speaking, Standard 3 children. This test is unique in that it provides comparable measures of reading and aural comprehension. The results indicated that although the performance of the South African children compared favourably with that of the American children on this test, it would be necessary to adapt the test extensively in order to make it…
