Trajectories of grief in Iranian culture
The loss of a family member can trigger diverse emotional responses shaped by the type of death and cultural context. Grief may follow a gradual terminal decline or a sudden death, influencing how it is experienced. This qualitative study examines the lived experiences of Iranian families facing both loss types. Using a phenomenological approach guided by Colaizzi's method, 22 bereaved participants were interviewed. Analysis identified 49 meaning…
Prolonged grief in African contexts
Although grief is a universal part of the human experience, for some, it may become a debilitating mental health disorder. Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) has recently been included in diagnostic guidelines worldwide, but there is little research on global applicability. To our knowledge, this is one of the preliminary studies to examine PGD rates, risk factors and psychometric validity of the International Prolonged Grief Disorder Scale (IPGDS) c…
When grief alters social self
Social disconnection is characterized by a tendency among bereaved individuals to assign negative meaning to others' behaviors, perceive themselves as changed in social interactions, and find comfort in withdrawal. It constitutes an important psychosocial pathway in bereavement adaptation. This study validated the Chinese version of Oxford Grief-Social Disconnection Scale (C-OG-SD) and examined its longitudinal predictive validity. A total of 428…
Cross-cultural assessment of prolonged grief symptomatology in Switzerland, Rwanda, and Viet Nam
Despite grief being a universal experience, current understanding of the trajectory and predictive factors of the new condition, Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), mostly arises from studies conducted in Europe and North America. Research suggests cultural variations in how grief develops across time. This study aims to longitudinally compare PGD growth patterns across Swiss, Vietnamese, and Rwandan bereaved individuals. Due to grief’s wave-like nat…
Mourning rituals impact grief outcomes in East and Southeast Asia
Grief expression and coping mechanisms following death vary across cultures, with East and Southeast Asian societies particularly emphasizing cultural practices and rituals. This review investigates the role of mourning rituals in bereavement in these regions. We reviewed literature across PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases, finding 10 studies reporting post-funeral rituals and grief outcomes in East and Southeast Asia. We categorize …
Feasibility, Acceptability and Clinical Utility of the Bereavement and Grief Cultural Formulation Interview for Prolonged Grief Disorder
Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a new diagnostic category included in global diagnostic classification systems for mental disorders. However, PGD can only be diagnosed if the severity and duration exceed socio-cultural norms. Here, we present a new supplementary module to the DSM-5 Cultural Formulation Interview: the Bereavement and Grief Cultural Formulation Interview (BG-CFI). The BG-CFI was developed to help clinicians provide a culturally i…
Research breakdowns
Impactful research on refugee mental health is urgently needed. To mitigate the growing refugee crisis, researchers and clinicians seek to better understand the relationship between trauma, grief and post-migration factors with the aim of bringing better awareness, more resources and improved support for these communities and individuals living in host countries. As much as this is our intention, the prevailing research methods, that is, online a…
Cultural adaptation of an internet-based self-help app for grieving Syrian refugees in Switzerland
These findings provide important insights and recommendations for the cultural adaptation of interventions and may help address the treatment gap for bereaved Syrian refugees
How the bereaved behave
Cultural norms may dictate how grief is displayed. The present study explores the display behaviours and rules in the bereavement context from a cross-cultural perspective. 86 German-speaking Swiss and 99 Chinese bereaved people who lost their first-degree relative completed the adapted bereavement version of the Display Rules Assessment Inventory. Results indicated that the German-speaking Swiss bereaved displayed more emotions than the Chinese …
The New ICD-11 Prolonged Grief Disorder Guidelines in Japan
Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a new mental health disorder, recently introduced in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), World Health Organization Classification of Diseases (WHO). The new ICD-11 guidelines reflect an emerging wave of interest in the global applicability of mental disorders. However, the selection of diagnostic core features in different cultural contexts has yet to be determined. Currently, there is debate i…
The Ambiguous Loss Inventory Plus (ALI+)
These descriptive results indicate that the ALI+ seems to cover the intended concept, thus showing promising face and content validity. However, further psychometric evaluations of the ALI+ are needed
Investigation into Grief Experiences of the Bereaved During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The objective of the current study was to investigate the grief experiences of people affected by COVID-19. The study adopted a qualitative design of descriptive phenomenology. Fifteen adults who had lost a family member during the COVID-19 pandemic were selected as the sample through the purposive sampling method until theoretical saturation was achieved. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews and the Colaizzi analysis method. Six m…
Grieving Parents' Meaning-Making Narration in Relation to Value Orientations
This study investigated the association between prolonged grief (PG) severity and meaning-making narration in a cross-cultural context, and specifically aimed to illustrate the role of value orientation in shaping the grieving process. 30 Chinese and 22 Swiss parents who lost their child were asked to narrate and appraise specific memories to reflect their self-evaluation of traditional and modern values. The self-reported Prolonged Grief Disorde…
Prolonged grief disorder in refugees from Syria
Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) is a new mental disorder recognised by the ICD-11. However, the cultural norms for grief in refugees or humanitarian migrants from Syria have not yet been established. Here we conduct an exploratory qualitative study of 10 key informant interviews with refugees from Syria with two main aims: (1) to identify common symptoms of normal or abnormal grief in refugees from Syria (2) to identify barriers to the acceptabili…
