Gender, austerity, and support for EMU across generations
Incorporating a feminist analytical framework, we examine, from a longitudinal and generational perspective, public support for European Monetary Union. Feminist critiques of EMU argue that narratives around the adoption of the euro, the impacts of austerity, as well as the economic recovery have to a large extent ignored women’s experiences. In light of these critiques, we examine the empirical evidence indicating growing support for EMU even af…

Economic interests and public support for the euro
Although economic theories have been advanced to explain public support for the common currency, we know very little about how public support for the euro has been affected by its economic impact. We hypothesize that concern about rising prices following the introduction of the euro may have dam-pened enthusiasm for the project. We use Eurobarometer data from 2000–2007 to examine how rising prices and other economic factors have shaped support fo…
The Enlargement of the European Union and Nato
The Enlargement of the European Union and NATO: Ordering from the Menu in Central Europe. By Wade Jacoby. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2004. 287p. $70.00 cloth, $23.99 paper. The enlargement of Europe has proven a lush garden for researchers to cultivate new approaches and theories of international and comparative politics and reengineer older approaches and theories. Many of these studies fit under the larger rubric of the “Europeaniza…
Europe matters teaching the EU in the US
Writing in their capacity as chairs of the European Union Studies Association’s group on ‘Teaching Europe ‘, these two authors retrace the history, current situation and challenges of teaching on the European Union in the USA. They underline in particular how, at the end of the 1980s, a combination of the relaunch of European integration and the fall of the Berlin wall led to a rise in student and academic interst in this subject. However, in ord…
The euro, economic interests and multi‐level governance
Support for a common currency and the European Monetary Union signifies that European citizens are willing to transfer power from the nation‐state to the European Union (EU). Given the symbolic importance of national currencies, this willingness to give up sovereignty over currency has important implications for the further integration and development of the European Union. Drawing on a multi‐level governance perspective and past research into pu…

Stimulating Simulations
This article examines the organization and development of the Mid-Atlantic European Union Simulation Consortium (MEUSC), with special emphasis on linking theory to practice within its simulation program. The MEUSC program, initiated in 1993, brings fifteen colleges and universities to Washington, D.C., each December for an intercollegiate experiential learning exercise on the European Union. During the simulation, students meet with professional …
Deutsche Mark Politics
Why is Germany prepared to sacrifice the deutsche mark for European Monetary Union? Peter Loedel’s novel analysis, incorporating domestic, European, and global aspects of German monetary policy, suggests that the institutional relationship between the Bundesbank and the federal government, together with Germany’s bargaining strategies toward European and global monetary-governance structures, can provide the answer to the deutsche mark puzzle. Ex…
