Pre-Covid-19 Sexuality-Based Stigma Predicts Mid-Pandemic Anxiety Increases in a Cohort of Sexual Minority Men in the United States
BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted mental health, including that of gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men (SMM). Few studies in the US have assessed stigma's role in shaping the mental health of historically marginalized populations during crises. METHODS: = 572), we examined the association between sexuality-based stigma (stigma from family and friends, anticipated healthcare stigma, general social stigma) in the precedin…
Development and Evaluation of Messages for Reducing Overscreening of Breast Cancer in Older Women
BACKGROUND: Many older women are screened for breast cancer beyond guideline-recommended thresholds. One contributor is pro-screening messaging from health care professionals, media, and family/friends. In this project, we developed and evaluated messages for reducing overscreening in older women. METHODS: We surveyed women ages 65+ who were members of a nationally representative online panel. We constructed 8 messages describing reasons to consi…
Measuring sexual behavior stigma among cisgender men who have sex with men
Our findings point to the utility of the two stigma scale dimensions in making cross-country comparisons, but also to the necessity of assessing invariance with explicit attention to several factors including differential disclosure of sexuality across contexts to ensure valid comparisons
Associations of Self-Care Health Behaviors With Driving Cessation Among Older Drivers
Older adults are at risk of driving cessation as they age, which can result in negative health outcomes including loss of independence. This study aimed to investigate the associations of self-care health behaviors with the risk of driving cessation. Demographics, health and driving characteristics were captured from healthcare systems in Denver, CO, San Diego, CA, Ann Arbor, MI, Baltimore, MD and Cooperstown, NY for 2,990 adults at baseline then…
Effectiveness of Social Needs Screening and Interventions in Clinical Settings on Utilization, Cost, and Clinical Outcomes
Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and invariance assessment of the perceived powerlessness scale among youth in Baltimore
Generalized perceived powerlessness is an important psychosocial construct that determines a wide range of health behaviors and outcomes. This study has two aims: (1) examine the structure of the newly developed perceived powerlessness scale using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and (2) assess the scale’s invariance across key demographic variables using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis among a random household sample of Afri…
The Longitudinal Association between Perceived Powerlessness and Sexual Risk Behaviors among Urban Youth
Role of Late-Life Depression in the Association of Subclinical Cardiovascular Disease With All-Cause Mortality
Late-life depression accounts for little, if any, of the association between subclinical CVD, a risk factor of all-cause mortality, and all-cause mortality
The Baltimore Experience Corps Trial
Results provide the first-ever, large-scale experimental demonstration that participation in an intergenerational civic engagement program can positively alter self-perceptions of generativity in older adulthood
Increases in Lifestyle Activities as a Result of Experience Corps® Participation
Healthcare Task Difficulty Among Older Adults With Multimorbidity
BACKGROUND: Applying disease-specific guidelines to people with multimorbidity may result in complex regimens that impose treatment burden. OBJECTIVES: To describe and validate a measure of healthcare task difficulty (HCTD) in a sample of older adults with multimorbidity. RESEARCH DESIGN: Cross-sectional and longitudinal secondary data analysis. SUBJECTS: Multimorbid adults aged 65 years or older from primary care clinics. MEASURES: We generated …

Marketing Public Health Through Older Adult Volunteering
Objectives. We present a social marketing conceptual framework for Experience Corps Baltimore City (EC) in which the desired health outcome is not the promoted product or behavior. We also demonstrate the feasibility of a social marketing–based recruitment campaign for the first year of the Baltimore Experience Corps Trial (BECT), a randomized, controlled trial of the health benefits of EC participation for older adults. Methods. We recruited old…

Association Between Executive Attention and Physical Functional Performance in Community-Dwelling Older Women
Executive difficulties in flexibly planning and initiating a course of action were selectively associated with slower performance of higher-order IADL tests, relative to other domains of cognition, in a high-functioning, community-based older cohort. These results suggest that executive functions may be important in mediating the onset and progression of physical functional declines
