The Archaeology of Unexploded World War II Bomb Sites in the Koźle Basin, Southern Poland

The heritage of the Second World War
The Koźle Basin in Poland was radically transformed by aerial bombardment during the Second World War. Today, the region has approximately 6000 well-preserved bomb craters with diameters ranging from 5-15m and depths often exceeding 2m. Based on 94 sites of the Bohunician, Szeletian, Aurignacian, and Gravettian cultures, marking the Neanderthal to Homo sapiens sapiens transition, stages in the evolution of the Paleolithic settlement north of the Moravian Gate are described with special reference to environmental adaptation.
