  • Understanding Covid ‐19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among K‐12 Staff, Parents, and Students

Open Access•Miguella Mark‐Carew, André Van Zyl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2023

OBJECTIVE: Despite widespread availability of COVID-19 vaccines, millions of Americans have not received the recommended vaccine doses. In the District of Columbia (DC), COVID-19 vaccination rates are lowest among residents who are Non-Hispanic (NH) Black and among school-aged children. We assessed COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among staff and parents of students in DC K-12 public and public charter schools. METHODS: We conducted a telephone-based s…

  • Observed Mask Use in Kindergarten Through Grade 12 Schools in Georgia—Fall, 2021

    Open Access•LaShonda L Hall, Ebony S Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2023

BACKGROUND: Universal masking, with additional layered prevention strategies, was an essential tool for limiting the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and ensuring a safe return to in-person learning for kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) students and staff. Few studies have examined mask adherence in this setting and none have described types of masks worn or locations of mask adherence. This project sought to assess mask adherence, types worn, and…

  • Association Between Social Vulnerability and a County’s Risk for Becoming a Covid-19 Hotspot — United States, June 1–July 25, 2020

Open Access•Sharoda Dasgupta, Virginia B Bowen et al.•ARTICLE•MMWR. Surveillance Summaries•2020

Poverty, crowded housing, and other community attributes associated with social vulnerability increase a community's risk for adverse health outcomes during and following a public health event (1). CDC uses standard criteria to identify U.S. counties with rapidly increasing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) incidence (hotspot counties) to support health departments in coordinating public health responses (2). County-level data on COVID-19 cases…

  • Covid-19 Among American Indian and Alaska Native Persons — 23 States, January 31–July 3, 2020

    Open Access•Sarah M Hatcher, Christine Agnew-Brune et al.•ARTICLE•MMWR. Surveillance Summaries•2020

with >70% complete race/ethnicity information and five or more laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases among both AI/AN persons (alone or in combination with other races and ethnicities) and non-Hispanic white (white) persons. Among 424,899 COVID-19 cases reported by these states, 340,059 (80%) had complete race/ethnicity information; among these 340,059 cases, 9,072 (2.7%) occurred among AI/AN persons, and 138,960 (40.9%) among white persons. • Evaluation of a computer-based and counseling support intervention to improve HIV patients’ viral loads

Gary Marks, Gary N Marks et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2018

We sought to integrate a brief computer and counseling support intervention into the routine practices of HIV clinics and evaluate effects on patients' viral loads. The project targeted HIV patients in care whose viral loads exceeded 1000 copies/ml at the time of recruitment. Three HIV clinics initiated the intervention immediately, and three other HIV clinics delayed onset for 16 months and served as concurrent controls for evaluating outcomes. …

  • County-Level Vulnerability Assessment for Rapid Dissemination of HIV or HCV Infections Among Persons Who Inject Drugs, United States

Michelle M Van Handel, Charles E Rose et al.•ARTICLE•JAIDS Journal of Acquired Immune…•2016

OBJECTIVE: A recent HIV outbreak in a rural network of persons who inject drugs (PWID) underscored the intersection of the expanding epidemics of opioid abuse, unsterile injection drug use (IDU), and associated increases in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. We sought to identify US communities potentially vulnerable to rapid spread of HIV, if introduced, and new or continuing high rates of HCV infections among PWID. DESIGN: We conducted a multi…

  • Exchange Sex and HIV Infection Among Men Who Have Sex with Men

Open Access•Lina Nerlander, Lina M Nerlander et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2016

  • Young Sexual Minority Males in the United States

    Open Access•Amy M Fasula, Emeka Oraka et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Sexual and…•2016•Citada por: 1•Referências: 4

Future investigations can further explore subpopulations of young sexual minority males and assess sexual trajectories, resilience and HIV risk

  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus Transmission at Each Step of the Care Continuum in the United States

Jacek Skarbinski, Emily S Rosenberg et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Internal Medicine•2015

IMPORTANCE: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission risk is primarily dependent on behavior (sexual and injection drug use) and HIV viral load. National goals emphasize maximizing coverage along the HIV care continuum, but the effect on HIV prevention is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the rate and number of HIV transmissions attributable to persons at each of the following 5 HIV care continuum steps: HIV infected but undiagnosed, HIV di…

Michael C Thigpen, Poloko Kebaabetswe et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•2012

BACKGROUND: Preexposure prophylaxis with antiretroviral agents has been shown to reduce the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among men who have sex with men; however, the efficacy among heterosexuals is uncertain. METHODS: We randomly assigned HIV-seronegative men and women to receive either tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine (TDF-FTC) or matching placebo once daily. Monthly study visits were scheduled, and particip…

    Marjorie K Mau, Joseph Keawe‘aimoku Kaholokula et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2010•Citada por: 7•Referências: 3

A fully engaged CBPR approach was successful in translating an evidence based diabetes prevention program into a culturally relevant intervention for NHOPI communities. This pilot study demonstrates that weight loss in high risk minority populations can be achieved over a short period of time using CBPR approaches

Deron C Burton, Brendan Flannery et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2010•Citada por: 5•Referências: 29

Objectives. We examined associations between the socioeconomic characteristics of census tracts and racial/ethnic disparities in the incidence of bacteremic community-acquired pneumonia among US adults. Methods. We analyzed data on 4870 adults aged 18 years or older with community-acquired bacteremic pneumonia identified through active, population-based surveillance in 9 states and geocoded to census tract of residence. We used data from the 2000…
