A strategic blueprint for strengthening respiratory syncytial virus prevention among under-five children in low- and middle-income countries
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of respiratory morbidity and mortality in children under five years of age, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In 2023, two RSV immunisation options, including a maternal RSV vaccine and a monoclonal antibody (mAb), became approved in several high-income countries. The World Health Organization has recently prequalified the maternal vaccine and the Gavi has committed fund…
Understanding how personalized pediatric asthma information and support addresses rural families’ unmet needs
PURPOSE: Asthma is a leading cause of disease burden in children and is associated with high hospitalization rates, particularly in rural areas. The Asthma Care from Home project implemented a co-developed pediatric asthma care model to reduce unscheduled hospitalizations by improving evidence-based asthma discharge support for children with asthma and their families living in rural Australia. As part of an implementation evaluation, this study a…
A retrospective cohort study and spatial analysis of climate and community-level determinants of respiratory syncytial virus notifications among Queensland infants, prior to the introduction of the RS…
Background Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a highly infectious seasonal respiratory pathogen and a major cause of morbidity in young children. In Australia, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalisation for bronchiolitis and pneumonia among children aged 6 months, when protection from maternal vaccination and birth dose therapeutics wanes
Accuracy of Mothers’ Perception of Birth Size to Predict Birth Weight Data in Bangladesh
An important consideration when calculating the LBW prevalence is that maternally perceived birth size is not an optimal proxy for birth weight. Focus should be placed on encouraging institutional births and educating community health workers and young mothers about the significance of measuring and recording birth weight
The Prevalence and Associated Factors of Depressive Symptoms Among Medical Students in Bangladesh During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Background: Whilst very limited studies have demonstrated a correlation between the COVID-19 pandemic and depressive symptoms amongst Bangladeshi medical students, the prevalence and associated factors of depressive symptoms as measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) remains widely unknown. Objective: The study aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with depression symptoms among Bangladeshi medical students durin…
Factors associated with pneumococcal nasopharyngeal carriage
Pneumococcal disease is a major contributor to global childhood morbidity and mortality and is more common in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) than in high-income countries. Pneumococcal carriage is a prerequisite for pneumococcal disease. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine reduces vaccine-type carriage and disease. However, pneumococcal carriage and disease persist, and it is important to identify other potentially modifiable factors associa…
Urban risk factors for human Rift Valley fever virus exposure in Kenya
The Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a zoonotic arbovirus that can also transmit directly to humans from livestock. Previous studies have shown consumption of sick animal products are risk factors for RVFV infection, but it is difficult to disentangle those risk factors from other livestock rearing activities. Urban areas have an increased demand for animal source foods, different vector distributions, and various arboviruses are understood to e…
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the uptake of routine maternal and infant vaccines globally
Maintaining routine vaccination coverage is essential to avoid outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. We aimed to understand the international impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine vaccination in pregnant women and children aged 0-5-years-old. A systematic review of quantitative and mixed methods studies exploring changes in vaccination coverage, vaccination services, and vaccine confidence since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic was co…
Antibiotic use for acute respiratory infections among under-5 children in Bangladesh
INTRODUCTION: Despite acute respiratory infections (ARIs) being the single largest reason for antibiotic use in under-5 children in Bangladesh, the prevalence of antibiotic use in the community for an ARI episode and factors associated with antibiotic use in this age group are unknown. METHODS: We analysed nationally representative, population-based, household survey data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2014 to determine the pre…

Dispensing Practices of Fixed Dose Combination Controller Therapy for Asthma in Australian Children and Adolescents
The Australian Asthma Handbook does not recommend use of fixed dose combination (FDC) controller medicines for asthma in children aged ≤5 years. FDCs are only recommended in children and adolescents (aged 6-18 years) not responding to initial inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy. Using Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme dispensing claims from 2013-2018, we examined the annual incident FDC dispensing and the incident FDC dispensing without prior ICS u…

The Prevalence and Impact of Intimate Partner Violence on Maternal Distress in a Community of Low-Income Bangladeshi and Displaced Ethnic Bihari Mothers
Low-income, ethnic, and/or displaced mothers are frequently victimized; we explored the burden of intimate partner violence (IPV) among such women. Teams administered IPV and maternal distress questionnaires to quantify victimization after the birth of a child. Of 250 mothers reporting abuse, 133 (53%) reported their husband hitting; 111 (44%) kicking, dragging, or beating; 61 (24%) choking or burning; and 33 (13%) injuring them with a knife or g…
