Free Association and Civil Society in Cuba, 1787-1895
This study provides a new perspective on civil society in Cuba during the nineteenth century based on concrete information about multiple types of association in different regions of the island. Modern associations developed mainly to meet specific social and cultural needs, achieve legal autonomy from the state and exercise free association despite colonial constraints. This long-term evolution covers several periods of intersections between civ…
Redes de alta corrupción en el Perú

Se indaga asimismo las íntimas vinculaciones de estas redes con líderes políticos en pos del poder ofreciendo a cambio recompensas venales que distorsionan reglas e …
Cuban Counterpoints
While Fernando Ortiz's contribution to our understanding of Cuba and Latin America more generally has been widely recognized since the 1940s, recently there has been renewed interest in this scholar and activist who made lasting contributions to a staggering array of fields. This book is the first work in English to reassess Ortiz's vast intellectual universe. Essays in this volume analyze and celebrate his contribution to scholarship in Cuban hi…
Implicit Costs of Empire
Cycles of bureaucratic corruption in nineteenth-century Cuba evolved according to institutional conditions shaped by interest groups, financial needs, imperatives of colonial governance, and internal conflicts and war. Corrupt gain inimical to general public interest was not a consequence of cultural constants, but of unreconstructed institutional flaws and weaknesses. The risks of engaging in bureaucratic corruption diminished under the systemat…
This is an edited volume in which six authors treat from different yet coordinated perspectives the impact of the war of 1898 on Spain, its dwindling empire, and Spanish society, economy, politics, culture, and national identity. It is a distinguished example of the copious publications in Spain on the occasion of the centennial of the Spanish-American War.The introduction to the volume by Juan Pan-Montojo reiterates the dominant consensus among …
Back to Basics
In the last four years, several publications have contributed to a critical mass of new knowledge on colonial Andean history. The most valuable of these contributions expand the field by diversifying into regional areas covered less in earlier works. These new inquiries refine the focus on the basic foundations of colonial Andean societies and economies by questioning sources of evidence with an imaginative critical methodology. They enrich and q…

Debt Politics After Independence
Tracing the origins of recent Latin American debt problems to the financial politics of the immediate post-independence period, Thomas Millington argues that the failure of Latin American states to fund their internal debts made them dependent on foreign credit. Negative political and social consequences remain today, he says, and suggests that debt management should move toward a funded debt goal and away from the floating debt framework that is…

Financial Development in Peru Under Agrarian Export Influence, 1884-1950
In the study of Latin America's economic history, discussion of the role of the export sector in promoting development has entered a provocative new stage. Recently, advances in the understanding of export economies have questioned the view that export orientation is the principal cause of underdevelopment and dependence. New studies have demonstrated the impact of export growth on the increasingly efficient use of domestic factors of production …

Financial Leadership and the Formation of Peruvian Elite Groups, 1884-1930
Attempts to find social explanations for Peruvian economic backwardness have focused on the role of the elite's economic leadership between 1884 and 1930. Some of these studies consider the leading social class as an obstacle to economic growth. According to these interpretations the elite had, first of all, traditional 'aristocratic' or irrational economic behaviour.1Secondly, the native elite's collaboration with international capital permitted…
