Coaching for change when working with families where a parent has a mental illness
A new co-designed intervention for families, the “Village” approach, was implemented in Austria to support children of parents with a mental illness and families, through enhancing a sustainable support system around the child. A newly developed workforce known as “Village Facilitators” (VF) were core to the implementation of this approach. Their role included understanding and supporting the unmet needs of the children and their families, addres…
Health dimensions
This article outlines an interdisciplinary research agenda in the nexus of climate change, extreme weather, human im/mobility and public health. We identify four research themes. First, climate im/mobility and health narratives, where research is needed on how competing narratives are adopted by citizens and how these influence their attitudes towards climate im/mobile groups, while also giving a stronger voice for these groups to tell their own …
Validation of a gender-specific binary depression screening version (Gids-15) in two German samples
The GIDS-15 is a solid, multidimensional depression screening instrument that should be complemented by a gender assessment tool. There is further evidence that the inclusion of additional criteria alters the gender ratio in depression screening. After further studies to validate the GIDS-15, implementation in primary care could be indicated. Gender beyond the binary should be analysed in further studies
Predicting Maltreatment in Adolescents with Mentally Ill Parents
Children of mentally ill parents are at a higher risk of developing mental health disorders and experiencing maltreatment. Identifying predictors of maltreatment in this risk group may help provide support at an earlier stage. A random forest classifier was applied to a sample of psychiatric inpatients (n = 330, 59.70% female, M Age = 41.15 years, SD Age = 7.12) and their children (n = 95, 60.00% female, M Age = 15.03 years, SD Age = 2.14) to exa…
Parent–child interactive behavior in a German sample of parents with and without a mental illness
Studies using observational measures often fail to meet statistical standards for both reliability and validity. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Coding Interactive Behavior (CIB) System within a German sample of parent-child dyads. The sample consisted of 149 parents with and without a mental illness and their children [n experimental group (EG) = 75, n control group (CG) = 74] who participated in the larger Children…
Children of parents with a mental illness – stigma questionnaire
The revised version of the COPMI-SQ (COPMI-SQ-r) is a reliable and economic questionnaire to assess SBA in adolescents who grow up with a parent with a mental illness. The COPMI-SQ-r can be used to help develop and evaluate anti-stigma and general interventions for affected adolescents
Empathy and psychopathology in children and adolescents
Our findings highlight the importance of implementing preventive programs for COPMI that specifically target the reduction of maladaptive ER
Parenting stress in parents with and without a mental illness and its relationship to psychopathology in children
Our findings highlight the importance of implementing intervention programs to reduce PS for parents and children. In particular, parents with a mental illness might benefit from specific intervention programs in order to interrupt the transgenerational transmission of mental disorders
Facial emotion recognition in children of parents with a mental illness
Our study does not support FER impairments as a general feature of COPMI. Instead, individual factors, such as the type of parental disorder and the timing of its onset, may play a crucial role in influencing FER development. Future research should consider these factors, taking into account the diverse landscape of parental mental disorders
When one has no Real illness”—analysis of the knowledge component of mental health literacy in children and adolescents of parents with a mental illness
Assessing COPMI's disorder knowledge and identifying associated age and sex differences yield valuable insights into the knowledge component of the MHL theory. Our findings can help to improve psychoeducational interventions for COPMI by orienting them to their prevailing levels of disorder knowledge. We recommend employing and extending the DSM-oriented deductive approach to assess knowledge within MHL. Analyses involving additional assessments …

Emotions or attention – what are predictors for the development of childhood psychopathology? A longitudinal study with pre- and elementary school children
Current debate has identified the factors emotion knowledge (EK) and attention as specific trajectories longitudinally influencing psychopathological development in childhood. The “Emotion Knowledge Hypothesis” assumes that children with great emotion skills have high self-regulating abilities that result in lower cognitive load and stronger attention capacities. Attention problems are thus perceived as a consequence of reduced EK. According to t…
On the association between students’ (domain-specific) subjective well-being and academic achievement—disentangling mixed findings
Today, there is wide recognition of schools as places that should foster children’s learning and well-being alike. The past two decades have thus witnessed an upsurge in research on children’s subjective well-being (SWB) in school and how it relates to their academic achievement. The first meta-analysis on the SWB/achievement relation revealed substantial, yet unexplained variability in effect sizes across samples and studies. In this context, in…
Metacognitive Transmission Between Parents and Children in the Context of Anxiety Disorders
One in ten children is affected by an anxiety disorder. Current state of research shows that transgenerational transmission as well as positive (POS) and negative (NEG) metacognitive beliefs are relevant in the context of anxiety disorders in youth. We investigated whether transgenerational transmission is also evident in conjunction with POS and NEG and cross-sectionally surveyed POS, NEG, anxiety symptoms and worry in 8-16-year-old children and…
Parental experiences of homeschooling during the Covid-19 pandemic
The aim of the present study was to examine parental experiences of homeschooling during the COVID-19 pandemic in families with or without a child with a mental health condition across Europe. The study included 6720 parents recruited through schools, patient organizations and social media platforms (2002 parents with a child with a mental health condition and 4718 without) from seven European countries: the UK ( n = 508), Sweden ( n = 1436), Spa…
Leave Me Alone With Your Symptoms! Social Exclusion at the Workplace Mediates the Relationship of Employee's Mental Illness and Sick Leave
Although a substantial part of employees suffers from a mental illness, the work situation of this population still is understudied. Previous research suggests that people with a mental illness experience discrimination in the workplace, which is known to have detrimental effects on health. Building on the stereotype content model and allostatic load theory, the present study investigated whether employees with a mental illness become socially ex…

Do Metacognitions of Children and Adolescents with Anxiety Disorders Change after Intensified Exposure Therapy
Metacognitive beliefs have repeatedly proven to play a role in anxiety disorders in children and adolescents, but few studies have investigated whether they change after cognitive behavioral therapy. This longitudinal intervention study explores whether positive and negative metacognitive beliefs in particular change after exposure-focused treatment, and if metacognitive changes predict reductions in anxiety symptoms. A sample of 27 children betw…
Children of Parents With a Mental Illness—Stigma Questionnaire
Children of parents with a mental illness are a particularly vulnerable group as they have a high risk to develop a mental disorder themselves and those are associated with high stigma. Moreover, just like primary recipients of stigma, they are affected by the social taboo surrounding mental illness: they do not receive enough information, are often left alone with their problems, and are thus considered "invisible children". In previous research…
The Impact of Prepartum Depression and Birth Experience on Postpartum Mother-Infant Bonding
The present study demonstrates the relevance of prepartum mental health of expectant mothers, especially of those who self-report prior mental health problems. The results support that reducing mental health problems of pregnant mothers might contribute to a more positive birth experience and potentially reduce postpartum depressive symptoms. As postpartum depression is associated with impaired parent-child bonding, such targeted interventions co…
Development of an Evidence-Informed and Codesigned Model of Support for Children of Parents With a Mental Illness— “It Takes a Village” Approach
Providing support to parents and their children to help address the cycle of intergenerational impacts of mental illness and reduce the negative consequences for children is a key focus of selective prevention approaches in public mental health. However, a key issue for children of parents with a mental illness is the lack of access to early intervention and prevention support when needed. They are not easily identifiable (until presenting with s…
Towards a Program Theory for Family-Focused Practice in Adult Mental Health Care Settings
Objectives: In several high-income countries, family-focused practice programs have been introduced in adult mental health care settings to identify and support children whose parents live with mental health problems. Whilst their common goal is to reduce the impact of parental mental illness on children, the mechanisms by which they improve outcomes in different systems and settings are less well known. This kind of knowledge can importantly con…
Development and Psychometric Properties of a Computer-Based Standardized Emotional Competence Inventory (MeKKi) for Preschoolers and School-Aged Children
A computer-based emotional competence inventory for preschoolers and school-aged children (MeKKi) was developed to assess five components of emotional competence: emotion vocabulary, emotion identification (situational, visual, auditory), emotion understanding, emotion expression, and emotion regulation. Validity, reliability, and factor structure were examined in a community sample of 313 preschoolers and school-aged children (164 boys, 145 girl…

Gender-Differentiated Parenting Revisited
Although various theories describe mechanisms leading to differential parenting of boys and girls, there is no consensus about the extent to which parents do treat their sons and daughters differently. The last meta-analyses on the subject were conducted more than fifteen years ago, and changes in gender-specific child rearing in the past decade are quite plausible. In the current set of meta-analyses, based on 126 observational studies (15,034 f…

Improving Identification and Child-Focused Collaborative Care for Children of Parents With a Mental Illness in Tyrol, Austria
Background: Children of parents with a mental illness (COPMI) are more likely to experience negative long-term adversities. However, interventions to support their needs early can significantly enhance adjustment and reduce negative outcomes. Approximately one in four children currently lives with a parent with mental illness worldwide. The lifelong impact for individuals, governments, and broader society is likely to be substantial. There are si…
Children of Mentally III Parents at Risk Evaluation (Compare)
Objectives: Mental disorders are frequent, associated with disability-adjusted life years, societal, and economic costs. Children of parents with a mental illness (COPMI) are at an increased risk to develop disorders themselves. The transgenerational transmission of mental disorders has been conceptualized in a model that takes parental and family factors, the social environment (i.e., school, work, and social support), parent-child-interaction a…
Compare Family (Children of Mentally Ill Parents at Risk Evaluation)
Background: Mental health problems are highly frequent, as well as being associated with enormous societal and economic costs and significant disability-adjusted life years. Children of parents with a mental illness (COPMI) are at a tremendously increased risk to develop disorders themselves. According to the literature, parental mental disorders launch a wave of risk factors that in turn predict the emergence of psychological problems in the off…

Influences on pre-service teachers’ intention to use classroom management strategies for students with ADHD
Students with ADHD often feel mistreated at school, receive low grades, and can have low socioeconomic statuses as adults. Evidenced-based classroom management strategies (CMS) are effective in minimizing ADHD-related issues in schools, but have not found their way into practice. 1086 pre-service teachers completed an online survey on direct experiences, social influences, individual differences, attitude, and intention to use CMS. We examined wh…
