Improving the provision for gynaecological health care in Bangladesh using Essential Gynaecological Skills implementation package
Background: Gynaecological health and its related service delivery have long been neglected in Bangladesh. In response to the high burden and improvements in the provision of gynaecological health care, the Essential Gynaecological Skills (EGS) implementation package was developed. It includes comprehensive in-service training for upskilling the non-specialised health care providers and introduces the first structured data recording system for gy…
Findings of an evaluation of a sexual and reproductive health programme in a humanitarian setting for the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh
Background: Since August 2017, around 940 000 forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals (FDMN), mostly women and children, have fled persecution in Myanmar and arrived in the refugee camps across the border in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. This large-scale humanitarian crisis created an urgency for sexual and reproductive healthcare-related services among many of the sexually assaulted FDMN women and girls. Ipas, an international non-governmental organisat…
Newborn signal functions in Bangladesh
Background: This study aimed to identify a set of newborn signal functions (NSFs) that can categorize health facilities and assist policymakers and health managers in appropriately planning and adequately monitoring the progress and performance of health facilities delivering newborn health care in Bangladesh and similar low-income settings. Methods: A modified Delphi method was used to identify a set of NSFs and a cross-sectional health facility…
Navigating the crisis landscape
This study demonstrates demand for abortion care exists among refugees. It also illustrates that these needs could have been easily overlooked in the complex environment of competing priorities during an emergency. When safe abortion services were made available, with relative ease and institutional support, women sought assistance, saving them from complications of unsafe abortions
Expanding Access to Comprehensive Abortion Care in Humanitarian Contexts
The need for comprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care can be especially acute during humanitarian crises, as women and girls are at increased vulnerability of experiencing sexual violence, unintended pregnancy and pregnancy-related complications. However, in such settings, the chaos of displacement and basic survival may supplant the importance of SRH care, and individuals may also have diminished access to safe services. Abortion …
Stillbirths
An estimated 2.6 million third trimester stillbirths occurred in 2015 (uncertainty range 2.4-3.0 million). The number of stillbirths has reduced more slowly than has maternal mortality or mortality in children younger than 5 years, which were explicitly targeted in the Millennium Development Goals. The Every Newborn Action Plan has the target of 12 or fewer stillbirths per 1000 births in every country by 2030. 94 mainly high-income countries and …
National, regional, and worldwide estimates of stillbirth rates in 2015, with trends from 2000
BACKGROUND: Previous estimates have highlighted a large global burden of stillbirths, with an absence of reliable data from regions where most stillbirths occur. The Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP) targets national stillbirth rates (SBRs) of 12 or fewer stillbirths per 1000 births by 2030. We estimate SBRs and numbers for 195 countries, including trends from 2000 to 2015. METHODS: We collated SBR data meeting prespecified inclusion criteria from…
Improving newborn care practices through home visits
BACKGROUND: Nearly all newborn deaths occur in low- or middle-income countries. Many of these deaths could be prevented through promotion and provision of newborn care practices such as thermal care, early and exclusive breastfeeding, and hygienic cord care. Home visit programmes promoting these practices were piloted in Malawi, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Uganda. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed changes in selected newborn care practices over time in p…
Newborn survival in Bangladesh
Remarkable progress over the last decade has put Bangladesh on track for Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 4 for child survival and achieved a 40% decline in maternal mortality. However, since neonatal deaths make up 57% of under-five mortality in the country, increased scale up and equity in programmes for neonatal survival are critical to sustain progress. We examined change for newborn survival from 2000 to 2010 considering mortality, coverage…
