The Time of Engolekume
Before taking up their new assignments in September 1918, Harry Rayne and D. R. Crampton met in Nairobi with Brigadier E. H. Llewellyn, the commandant of the KAR, to report on the recent operations against the Turkana and to discuss the future administration of the district. They concluded that while the southern sections were anxious for peace, the northerners would have to be controlled with a firm hand for some time to come. The operations had…
Apetaret
Toward the end of 191 7 Harry Rayne exchanged messages with officers in the Sudan and Uganda to explore, once again, the possibility of joint operations against the Turkana. Everyone agreed that their dangerous ‘expansion’ had to be countered, and the ‘hectic condition’ prevailing in the district rectified. Noting that the ‘Turkana tribe had ... consistently opposed any attempt by the Administration to settle its country’, Rayne was anxious this …
The Vulture from the Sky
The outside forces that were so decisively to alter the course of Turkana history in the twentieth century were preceded by forerunners who already had begun to appear in Eturkan by the closing decades of the previous century. By the 1870s enterprising ivory-hunters had methodically annihilated much of the elephant population of East Africa. Hunting and trading expeditions from the Swahili towns of the coast, spurred by soaring ivory prices, push…

The Turkana and Eturkan
The Turkana people of north-western Kenya belong to the Ateker group of the Eastern Nilotic linguistic family. Currently numbering over 200,000, they are the largest community of that group. Earlier population data are sketchy, but at the beginning of the twentieth century the Turkana probably numbered between 30,000 and40,000.
Ekaru Apumpum
While Kokoi and the northern Turkana were buying guns in the north, a new British district commissioner arrived in the south: in December 1913 Dudley Russell Crampton relieved Alexander Bruce at Marich Post. He was a corpulent man, known affectionately to his colleagues as ‘our heavy-weight CPO’ and to the Turkana as the ‘great fat red bull’. Meticulous to the point of being fussy he affected a monocle and dined on spotless white linen even when …
‘Those with Angry Bowels’
As Lokoel had promised, Loolel Kokoi and Ebei found that Mt. Labur provided a secure sanctuary from British harassment: for as British East Africa had been extending its control over southern Eturkan for a decade before 1913, Uganda clung to a policy of restraint regarding the northern areas under its jurisdiction. The guidelines had been laid out by James Hayes¬Sadler, the Uganda commissioner, in 1905: The policy of the Administration is rather …
The People of Blood and the People of Water
The decline in status of the senior elders which had accompanied the alteration of the generation-set system created something of a power vacuum in an already acephalous and potentially fissiparous Turkana political environment. Concurrently, the initial momentum of Turkana territorial expansions began to slow. Part of the reason apparently was a more determined resistance to Turkana encroachments which began to be offered by a Maa-speaking peopl…

Ekaru Ekwakoit The Time of the White Bone
After learning of Otter’s death during his visit to Kakuma, Arnold Hodson pushed on westwards to continue his border inspection. Qanazmach Laku, the Ethiopian official from Maji assigned to accompany him, abruptly began complaining of illness, and returned with his bodyguards toward Maji. On the march, however, Lakujoined 70 Ethiopian riflemen waiting in a prearranged place and attacked Turkana settlements, killing people and looting livestock. T…

The Scattering Time
This is the first full study of the Turkana people of north-western Kenya and their armed resistance of the Turkana people of north-western Kenya to British colonial administration in the early twentieth century. From their first encounters with the colonial vanguard in the 1890s to the final surrender of the Great Diviner, Loolel Kokoi, in 1926, the Turkana resisted imperial conquest. Even after the imposition of colonial rule, they continued to…
The People of the Grey Bull
While archaeology and linguistics provide an important basis for the reconstruction of the early history of those parts of eastern Africa inhabited by pastoral societies, oral traditions also can make a valuable contribution. In this paper an examination of the traditions of the Turkana of north-western Kenya reveals an often remarkably sophisticated rendering of complex processes of origin and migration. Moreover, those traditions also embody in…
The Shaping of Somali Society
Following in the scholarly tradition of E. Cerulli and I.M. Lewis, L.V. Cassanelli has written a noteworthy book on the historical development (1600-1910) of Somali society adapting to changing political, economic, and natural environments. As Cassanelli shows, most adaptive innovations were firmly rooted in traditional institutions enduring into the present. Thus Somali patterns of clan sociopolitical and pastoral economic organization are still…
Aspects of Turkana Leadership during the Era of Primary Resistance
After a considerable period of conflict with nineteenth-century traders, hunters and ‘explorers’, the Turkana of northwestern Kenya actively resisted the occupation of their country by the Imperial forces of British East Africa and Uganda during the second and third decades of the twentieth century. At first, this primary resistance was largely in the hands of war-leaders, notably Ebei, the most important military leader of the southern sections.…
