The Production of Bronze in Late Third-Millennium Babylonia (ca. 2100–2000 BCE)
Cuneiform texts dating to the Third Dynasty of Ur (ca. 2100 – 2000 BCE) contain unusually extensive and detailed data on the manufacture of bronze in ancient Babylonia. Mentions of the objects made of tin bronze (Sumerian zabar ) are comparatively rare. Such examples mainly concern high status items. By contrast, utilitarian objects such as hoes, sickles, and axes, thousands of which were routinely produced, are usually described in texts as bein…
The Iconography of the Goddess Ninhursag
This communication discusses the enigmatic representation of a Mesopotamian birth-goddess that appears on a group of Old Babylonian clay plaques. The goddess, who may be identified as Ninhursag/Ninmah, is shown offering bread to three infants. On the bottom, at either side of the goddess, a crouching, emaciated male is depicted. Scholars have formerly identified these two figures as either kūbu demons or human fetuses. It is argued here that, ins…
A Campaign of Southern City-States against Kiš as Documented in the ED IIIa Sources from Šuruppak (Fara)
A group of ED IIIa texts from Šuruppak (Fara) describes a mobilization of troops from Uruk, Adab, Nippur, Lagaš, Umma, and Šuruppak, clearly in anticipation of a major military operation. It is argued that the target of that campaign, which was led by Uruk, was the city-state of Kiš. The analysis of various other sources further suggests that, during the ED IIIa period, Uruk was able to bring significant portions of southern Babylonia under its c…

In Search of Dugurasu
The identity of the toponym Dugurasu, which is mentioned some fifty times in the ED IIIb documentation from Ebla, is a highly contested issue. While M. G. Biga had proposed an identification with Egypt, A. Archi then argued that Dugurasu was situated in northwestern Iran. This study offers a systematic examination of all the attestations of Dugurasu, focusing on the types of materials traded between Dugurasu and Ebla. It also considers evidence b…

Babylonian Priesthood during the Third Millennium BCE
This article offers an overview of the early Babylonian priesthood, as it was organized and operated during the third millennium BCE . It is emphasized that the priests and priestesses proper, i.e., individuals who were specifically concerned with cultic matters, represented a relatively small segment of the employees of temple households. Much more numerous within these institutions (which might more appropriately be termed “temple communities”)…
The Reluctant En of Inana — or the Persona of Gilgameš in the Perspective of Babylonian Political Philosophy
Both the literary tradition and historical data proper indicate that, during the first few centuries of third millennium BC , Babylonian kingship underwent a significant transformation. While the original leaders of city-states were primarily ritual officials, beginning at ca. 2900–2800 various individuals began emancipating themselves from their ritual roles and the concomitant power of temple households, becoming instead purely secular official…
Care for the Elderly in Ur III Times
This communication studies the Ur III worker-designations ab ( -ba ) -i l 2 , ama-i l 2 , and ( nu-mu- ) su-i l 2 , which appear in the economic sources from Umma and Girsu/Lagaš. Expending on the earlier treatments by C. Wilcke and W. Sallaberger, it is argued that these classifications designate workers who were temporarily freed from the performance of corvée duty, in order to be able to care for their elderly (and probably ailing) mothers and…

New Light on Šimaški and Its Rulers
An examination of the data pertaining to the Šimaškian Yabrat (Ebarat) reveals that this Iranian ruler controlled, during the later phase of the Ur III period, a powerful state in central Iran. It appears that Yabrat's influence extended to the neighboring state of Anšan, which may even have been his political dependency. A close and dependent ally of the House of Ur until the reign of Ibbi-Suen, Yabrat subsequently became a major threat to Babyl…

II. Threshing Implements in Ancient Mesopotamia
This note examines the textual evidence bearing on Mesopotamian threshing implements, in the hope of throwing some light on the Uruk representations of sledges discussed in the first part of this article. The relevant terminology is limited to four words: giš-bad(-rá), kissappu , and dajaštu , and ḪAR-ḫa-da. “Of these, giš-bad(-rá), kissappu , and dajaštu have previously been recognized as denoting threshing implements; the suggestion that anothe…

I.1. The last few years saw the publication of two important studies pertaining to the renting of fields in the Ur III period, authored by K. Maekawa 1) and F. R. Kraus 2), respectively. Maekawa's article has as its topic the renting of fields belonging to the domain of the temple households in the province of Laga', while Kraus devotes his study to a small group of Ur III field-rent documents, most of them from Dusabara, an agricultural settleme…
