Genetic, geographic, and linguistic variation among South American Indians
To better understand the relationship between genetic variability, geographical distance, and linguistic affiliation in South Amerinds, and to elucidate whether the migration rate is the same for both sexes, spatial autocorrelation, Mantel's test, and F ST analyses were performed in four sets of populations and alleles (group 1: 48 populations, 12 alleles; group 2: 16 (all belonging to the Tupi linguistic group) and 12; group 3: 21 and 17; and gr…
New genetic data on Amerindians from the Paraguayan Chaco
New data on 17 blood group and protein genetic systems obtained among the Ayoreo and Lengua Indians of Paraguay are presented. They include the first report on the red cell band‐3 protein investigated among South American Indians. This information was integrated with previous results available for these two and four other groups. Five of the six populations reside in the Chaco area, while the sixth was included as an outgroup living elsewhere in …

Genetic relationships between Amerindian populations of Argentina
A total of 495 individuals from five different Argentinian tribes was examined for variation in 23 blood group and protein genetic systems, and the results were integrated with previous data on some of these systems. These tribes generally present RH ∗︁ R1, PGM1 ∗︁ 1, and ACP ∗︁ A frequencies lower and RH ∗︁ R2, ESD ∗︁ 1, and GLO ∗︁ 1 prevalences higher than those observed in other South American Indian groups. Earlier studies with mitochondrial …
Albumin genetic variability in South America
A total of 5,020 individuals living in two southern Brazilian states were screened in relation to albumin types; two variants were found, in Passo Fundo (Nagasaki 2) and Vera Cruz (Tradate 2). Another variant, detected in the northeast, was identified as Porto Alegre 2, which also occurs in other places in Brazil, as well as in India, Pakistan, and Turkey. The results were integrated with those obtained in other studies in South America, yielding…
Linked loci in chromosome 1 (FXIIIB, HF, Pepc) and their variability in Brazilian Indians
A total of 352 individuals living in seven localities of two Brazilian Indian groups (Macushi and Içana River Indians) were variously studied for coagulation factor XIIIB, human factor H, and a new polymorphism of peptidase C. No significant inter‐ or intra‐tribal differences were found for the FXIIIB alleles, the frequencies varying around 95% for F13B * 3 and 5% for F13B * 1 . Results for HF were heterogeneous, HF * A presenting a much higher f…
Blood genetic systems in four Amazonian tribes
Data on 31 genetic systems were obtained for 421 individuals belonging to the Arara, Arawete, Mundurucu, and Jamamadi tribes of northern Brazil. The Jamamadi depart farthest, and the Mundurucu least, from South American Indian averages. These data are analyzed together with those of 24 other Amazonian groups. Genetic distances and corresponding dendrograms indicate a cluster of 14 related tribes living north of the Amazon river. These genetic res…
Genetic variation within a linguistic group
A total of 136 individuals were studied in relation to 31 genetic systems, and the results were compared with South American Indian averages and previous surveys on the Wayana of French Guiana and Surinam. The information was afterwards integrated with data from other Carib groups, and two types of genetic distances (Nei's and Edwards') were calculated a) between five groups, considering ten systems; and b) between nine groups, using five systems…
