Genetic studies of serum transferrins of free‐ranging rhesus macaques of Cayo Santiago, Macaca mulatta (Zimmerman 1780)
Transferrin phenotypes of plasma from 687 semi‐free‐ranging Macaca mulatta living on Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico, were determined by starch‐gel electrophoresis and autoradiography. Fifteen phenotypes, homozygous or heterozygous products of six codominant autosomal alleles, were present in the population. The 687 animals, prior to March 1973, were divided into eight troops plus peripheral males. By March 1, 1973 the size of the population was reduc…
Carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes in nine troops of Kenya baboons, Papio cynocephalus (Linnaeus 1766)
The distributions of alleles at the carbonic anhydrase I (CA I = CA B) and carbonic anhydrase II (CA II = CA C) loci in nine troops of Papio cynocephalus were determined. Two alleles were found at the CA I locus, and three at the CA II locus; the frequencies were: CA I a = 0.856; CA I b = 0.144; CA II a = 0.784; CA II b = 0.209; CA II c = 0.007. Results of tests for Hardy‐Weinberg equilibrium, homogeneity tests, and calculations of migration rate…
Transferrins, haptoglobins, and ceruloplasmins among tribal groups of Madagascar
Transferrin phenotypes of 403 Malagasy were determined by autoradiography after electrophoresis of plasma or serum. Three phenotypes, Tf C, Tf CD, and Tf D, were found. The frequency of Tf D was 0.051 in the total sample, 0.041 in tribes of the Madagascar plateau, and 0.075 in tribes of the coastal and lowland regions. Haptoglobin phenotypes of 402 Malagasy were determined. The frequency of Hp 1 was 0.41 in the total sample, 0.38 in tribes of the…
Hemoglobins, haptoglobins, and transferrins in indigenous populations of Kenya
Hemoglobin, haptoglobin, and transferrin phenotypes were determined by means of starch‐gel electrophoresis for a sample of 226 Kenya hospital patients. Allele frequencies were: Hb β S =0.081; Hp 1 =0.057; Tf D =0.038. Hemoglobin S was the only aberrant hemoglobin found in this sample. Transferrins C and D were the only transferrins found. Hemoglobin and transferrin phenotypes were also determined for a sample of 201 newborn Kenya infants. One of …
Fetal hemoglobin in newborn baboons, Papio cynocephalus
Hemoglobins from a newborn baboon, Papio cynocephalus , and from a 15‐day‐old baboon of the same species were examined for electrophoretic properties of polypeptide chains and were tested for alkali resistance. Hemoglobin of newborn P. cynocephalus appears to be analogous to human fetal hemoglobin. Hemoglobin of newborn P. cynocephalus is composed of α‐like and γ‐like chains and hemoglobin of adult P. cynocephalus is composed of α‐like and β‐like…
