  • Magnitude of sex differences in dichotomous ossification sequences of the hand and wrist

    Open Access•Stanley M Garn, Andrew K Poznanski et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1975•Citada por: 1•Referências: 6

Among the dichotomous (present/absent:absent/present) ossinication sequences individually ascertained in 3059 boys and girls with at least one but not more than 27 ossification centers of the hand and wrist, 54 such sequences exhibit statistically‐significant sex differences in frequency, 32 of them at the 1% confidence level or better. Analyzed by regions (rows and rays, epiphyses and round bones), ten centers, primarily distals and those of the…

  • Independence of brachymesophalangia‐5 from brachymesophalangia‐5 with cone mid‐5

    Open Access•Stanley M Garn, Andrew K Poznanski et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1972•Citada por: 6•Referências: 6

Analysis of hand radiographs of juvenile siblings of juvenile propositi indicates that brachymesophalangia‐5 alone (without cones) is separately inherited without apparent sex bias while brachymesophalangia‐5 with the cone‐epiphysis of mid‐5 and the cone‐epiphysis of mid‐5 alone are both apparently inherited as a complex and with a marked excess of females over males

  • Size reduction associated with brachymesophalangia‐5

    Open Access•Stanley M Garn, Jerrold M Nagy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1972•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

Subjects with brachymesophalangia‐5 (the short middle segment trait of the fifth digit) are systematically reduced in the length of the second metacarpal and in stature, by approximately 0.5 standard deviations, in contrast with unaffected individuals or unaffected siblings of affected propositi. There is conclusive evidence for axial and appendicular length reduction in affected individuals, and the smaller body size associated with brachymesoph…

  • Dysharmonic maturation of the hand in the congenital malformation syndromes

    Open Access•Andrew K Poznanski, Stanley M Garn et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1971•Citada por: 2•Referências: 15

In many congenital malformation syndromes the pattern of hand‐wrist development does not fit the sequence pictured in the Greulich‐Pyle atlas. Not infrequently, there is a difference in maturation level of carpal and phalangeal centers in excess of that found in clinically normal children. Usually, the carpal centers are less developed than the phalangeal centers, whereas overall skeletal maturation is retarded (as in trisomy 18) or advanced (as …

  • The operational meaning of maturity criteria

    Open Access•Stanley M Garn, Andrew K Poznanski et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1971•Citada por: 1•Referências: 6

The fact that specific radiographic criteria represent different proportions of attained maturity in males and females, in individuals of different geographical origin, in undernourished as opposed to over‐nourished subjects and in genetic or chromosomal extremes together indicates the operational complexity of “skeletal maturity” and indicates the need to separate those aspects of skeletal development that are not sex‐hormone dependent from thos…

  • Analysis of triquetral‐lunate fusion

    Open Access•Stanley M Garn, A Roberto Frisancho et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1971•Citada por: 3•Referências: 6

Fusion of the centers of the triquetral and lunate (the os lunato‐triquetrum) was observed in 1.6% of 7,543 subjects primarily of African origin as compared with 0.1% of 11,663 persons of European origin. The fusion was twice as common in females as in males, multifactorial inheritance was suggested in the lineages studied, and a possible selective disadvantage was postulated after comparison with West African fusion frequencies

  • Applications of radiodermatography to human and primate studies

    Open Access•Stanley M Garn, Andrew K Poznanski et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1970•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

Using 325‐mesh tantalum powder as a contrast medium, it is possible to take high‐resolution “radiodermatographs” of man and infra‐human primates that combine the advantages of postero‐anterior hand radiographs and conventional paper palm‐and‐finger prints. The radiodermatographs are particularly useful in relating creases, triradii and fingertip ridge patterns to differences in the proportions of the carpals, metacarpals and phalanges
