  • Staying in Place, Staying Connected

Open Access•Mabeline Velez, Robert McDonough et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2026

The COVID‐19 pandemic disrupted human relationships through public health distancing mandates and migration shifts. These changes had the potential to be especially disruptive in public housing, which are government‐funded developments for housing low‐income, frequently mobile, populations. In light of these social upheavals, our goal is to leverage this natural experiment to understand the persistence of relationships, measured as ties in social…

  • Predicting social network homophily on common chronic disease risk behaviors among public housing residents

Open Access•Sharon M Casey, Mabeline Velez et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Attributes and behaviors tend to cluster (homophily) among connected individuals (social networks). Accordingly, the design of effective interventions to address chronic disease risk behaviors at the individual level has proven challenging. To effectively move behavior-change interventions upstream, beyond the individual, an understanding of behavior clustering within a social context is required. This ego-centric/participant reported social netw…

  • Perceptions of dietary sugar consumption among public housing residents using a modified qualitative photovoice methodology

Open Access•Mabeline Velez, Brenda Heaton et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

The multiple social contextual influences on dietary sugar consumption identified in this study, particularly centrality of the home, cultural influences, individual-level sabotaging factors, may be useful for development of culturally tailored health promotion messaging and intervention through multiple channels

  • Trends of children being given advice for dental checkups and having a dental visit in the United States

Open Access•Huabin Luo, Raul I Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2020

Although there was an increase in the proportion of children being given advice to have dental checkups by PCPs from 2001 to 2016, there was no significant increase in having a dental visit among children being given the advice. More research is needed to better understand how dental care advice from a PCP can effectively motivate and facilitate dental care for children

  • Dental service utilization and immigrant family structure

Open Access•Christopher Okunseri, Klea Rota et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2020

Stratification into the different subgroups allowed for improved understanding of dental procedure utilization and dental services utilization in all subgroups increased over time. Immigrant children had lower utilization of preventive procedures and higher utilization of surgical and restorative procedures

  • Determinants of emergency department utilization for non‐traumatic dental conditions in Massachusetts

Open Access•Ashwini Ranade, Gary J Young et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2018

Increased access to preventive dental services may lower likelihood of ED use for NTDCs. Interventions that target younger adults, Medicaid enrollees, and the uninsured, may be the most efficient way to lower NTDC ED use

  • Oral health beliefs, knowledge, and behaviors in Northern California American Indian and Alaska Native mothers regarding early childhood caries

Open Access•Brenda Heaton, Andrew Crawford et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2017

Despite generally high-level oral health knowledge, perceptions of self and child oral health remains low in this sample of AIAN mothers. Factors identified as being associated with oral health behaviors in this sample were similar to those found in other health disparities populations

  • Healthy Futures

Open Access•Raul I Garcia, Dushanka V Kleinman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2017

Childhood obesity is a major public health problem. An association between obesity and dental caries, the most prevalent disease of childhood, has been identified. One explanation for the association is that consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and frequent snacking on carbohydrate-rich foods are common risk factors for development of both obesity and caries. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has been at the forefront of national effo…

    Nancy Kressin, Nancy R Kressin et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1996•Referências: 14

The contribution of oral health to health-related quality of life (HQOL) has seldom been examined. This study was designed to develop and validate a measure of oral health-related quality of life (OHQOL), examine relations between OHQOL and HQOL, and explore OHQOL's relation to problem-based dental care utilization in a sample of 1,242 older men, using data gathered by a mail survey. Factor analysis of eight oral health items revealed that three …

  • Validation of Self‐reported Oral Health Measures

Open Access•Waranuch Pitiphat, Raul I Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2002

Self-reports provide reasonably valid estimates for numbers of remaining teeth, fillings, root canal therapy, and fixed and removable prostheses. However, they appear to be less useful for the assessment of dental caries and periodontal disease in the two populations we have studied. There remains a need and potential to further develop self-report oral health measures that are valid for use in large population studies. Such self-report measures …
