Agency as a Psychoanalytic Idea
Competent agency is a basic assumption of psychoanalytic change. Yet as an aspect of health, personal agency has in the main been only intuitively addressed and remains clinically unsystematized. Here experience-near and observer-centered criteria are developed that assess a person-as-agent’s competence in particular domains. Our pull to grasp narrative structures—including beginnings and especially endings—applies not only to the intentional craft of fictions, but to life as lived, as it is in psychoanalytic termination.
