  • The New Swedish Cyprus Expedition

Open Access•Peter M Fischer, Rainer Feldbacher et al.•ARTICLE•Opuscula Annual of the Swedish…•2025

The 14th and 15th excavation seasons at the Late Bronze Age site of Hala Sultan Tekke focused on the excavation of tombs threatened by agricultural activities and erosion. Magnetic anomalies detected in 2017 aligned with concentrations of sherds in the ploughed soil, revealing six tombs: the partly looted Chamber Tomb VV and the intact Chamber Tombs XX, YY, ZZ, AB East and AB West. These stratified tombs, with successive interments, complement th…

  • Mycenaean Pefkakia Excavation Project

Open Access•Bartłomiej Lis, Anthi Batziou et al.•ARTICLE•Polish Archaeology in the…•2024

This is a report on the second season of a five-year (2022–2026) archaeological project at the site of Mycenaean Pefkakia, which is a collaboration between the Polish Archaeological Institute at Athens and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Magnesia. In 2023, following an extensive geophysical survey and geoarchaeological corings conducted during the previous season, two trenches were opened in sectors designated as B and C. In Sector B, a burial gro…

  • Plant Use by the Funnel Beaker Farmers in Poland. New Archaeobotanical Data From Pottery Sherds and Daub Imprints

    Open Access•Dominika Kofel, Kamil Adamczak•ARTICLE•Acta Universitatis Lodziensis…•2024•Referências: 4

The article presents the results of archaeobotanical studies on plant macroremains preserved both in charred form and as imprints in pottery and daub. The materials were collected from Funnel Beaker culture sites in Kałdus, Sławęcinek, Kietrz, and Małe Czyste. In total, 218 daub fragments and 33 pottery sherds were analysed. Most of the assemblages contained at least one of the searched items, such as imprints and/ or charred macroremains. Hulled…

  • Lead isotopic compositions link copper axes from Kietrz (Poland, 3500–3350 BC) to Slovak and Balkan copper mines

    Open Access•Łukasz Kowalski, Zofia Anna Stos-Gale et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2024•Citada por: 5•Referências: 24

Chemical and lead isotope analyses aided by metallographic examination of copper axes found at the Late Neolithic settlement of Kietrz in southwestern Poland provide new evidence for the origin of copper and metal trade routes in the region. Our results indicate that metal used for the axes could be sourced from copper mines in modern Slovakia, Bulgaria and perhaps Serbia. The evidence from this study confirms that the Funnel Beaker people from P…

  • The New Swedish Cyprus Expedition 2019

Open Access•Peter M Fischer, Tyler Burge et al.•ARTICLE•Opuscula Annual of the Swedish…•2020

The tenth season of excavations at the Late Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke was carried out in four areas: City Quarter 1 (CQ1), CQ4, City Wall 1 (CW1), and Area A (Tomb RR). The excavations in CQ1 provided additional information on the pre-LC IIIA occupation of the city. Stratum 3 which can be dated to the LC IIC (13th century BC) was further exposed. For the first time in the city even older phases, Strata 4 and 5, were found. These are te…

  • To Dye or Not to Dye

    Dominika Kofel•ARTICLE•Światowit•2019

Dated to the Late Bronze Age (Late Cypriot II: 1450–1200 BC and Late Cypriot III: 1200–1050 BC), the site of Hala Sultan Tekke brought to light interesting evidence of textile production and possible fabric dyeing. Finds of loom weights and spindle whorls together with remains of dyer’s croton (Chrozophora tinctoria), field gromwell (Buglossoides arvensis syn. Lithospermum arvense), and shells of murex allow opening a discussion over the methods …

  • The New Swedish Cyprus Expedition 2018

Open Access•Peter M Fischer, Tyler Burge et al.•ARTICLE•Opuscula Annual of the Swedish…•2019

During the ninth field season at the Late Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke, excavations in City Quarter 1 (CQ1) continued and brought to light industrial and domestic structures belonging to three phases of occupation (Strata 3–1) dating to the 13th and 12th centuries BC (LC IIC–IIIA). Finds of more than half a ton of copper slag together with remains of furnaces and tuyères indicate intensive urban copper production. There is also evidence o…

  • The New Swedish Cyprus Expedition 2017

Open Access•Peter M Fischer, Tyler Burge et al.•ARTICLE•Opuscula Annual of the Swedish…•2018

During the eighth field season at the Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke, excavations in City Quarter 1 (CQ1) exposed massive industrial and domestic structures belonging to three phases of occupation (Strata 3–1) dating to the 13th and 12th centuries BC (LC IIC–IIIA). Georadar survey, penetrating to a maximum depth of approximately 1 m, guided the excavation of walls of Strata 1–2, both of which were destroyed by conflagration. Excavations 1.5…

  • The New Swedish Cyprus Expedition. Excavations at Hala Sultan Tekke (The Söderberg Expedition)

Open Access•Peter M Fischer, Tyler Burge et al.•ARTICLE•Opuscula Annual of the Swedish…•2017

In the seventh season at the Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke excavations continued in City Quarter 1 (CQ1) where georadar indicated stone structures to the south of the area excavated in 2010–2012. Massive domestic structures, which belong to three phases of occupation (Strata 1–3), were exposed. Both the most recent Stratum 1, and Stratum 2 were destroyed in a conflagration. The three phases are preliminarily dated to the 13th and 12th cent…

  • The New Swedish Cyprus Expedition 2015. Excavations at Hala Sultan Tekke

Open Access•Peter M Fischer, Tyler Burge et al.•ARTICLE•Opuscula Annual of the Swedish…•2016

In 2015 the sixth season of the renewed excavations at the Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke continued in the compound which was exposed in Area 6W in 2013–2014. Further evidence of textile processing was found. The results of another ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey in 2014 indicated a new city quarter west of the former. Excavations were initiated there in 2015 and parts of the remains of a large compound were exposed. Two occupation…

  • The New Swedish Cyprus Expedition 2014. Excavations at Hala Sultan Tekke

Open Access•Peter M Fischer, Tyler Burge et al.•ARTICLE•Opuscula Annual of the Swedish…•2015

The initial aim of the project—the search for the oldest city of Hala Sultan Tekke—continued in 2014. Geophysical methods were used, which led to the discovery of new city quarters, and a broadening of the research objectives, to include revealing the total extent of the city. The GPR survey indicated a huge stone compound of at least 50 m × 40 m to the west of a probable street. Excavations continued in Area 6 West, where in 2013 a domestic and …
